וְכַאֲשֶׁר הֲשִׁיבוֹתִי אֶל מַחֲשַׁבְתִּי בְּעִנְיַן הָאֶחָד הָאֱמֶת רָאִיתִי כִּי יִחוּדוֹ בְּלֵב שָׁלֵם לֹא יִתְקַיֵּם בְּנֶפֶשׁ הַמַּאֲמִין כְּשֶׁלִּבּוֹ שִׁכּוֹר בְּיֵין אַהֲבַת עוֹלָם וְנוֹטֶה אֶל תַּאֲווֹתָיו הַבַּהֲמִיּוֹת. וְאִם יִשְׁתַּדֵּל לְפַנּוֹת אֶת לְבָבוֹ וּלְסַלֵּק אֶת מַצְפּוּנוֹ מִמּוֹתְרֵי הָעוֹלָם וְלִפְרוֹשׁ מִמַּעֲדַנָּיו יִתְקַיֵּם הַיִּחוּד הַשָּׁלֵם בְּלִבּוֹ וְיַעַל אֶל מַעֲלָתוֹ. שַׂמְתִּי הַפְּרִישׁוּת שֹׁרֶשׁ תְּשִׁיעִי לַכְּלָל מֵחוֹבוֹת הַלְּבָבוֹת.
When I meditated on the matter of the true Unity, I saw that the wholehearted acknowledgement of His Unity cannot possibly endure even in the soul of the believer, if his heart is drunk with the wine of love of this world and he inclines to the material pleasures. But if he strives to empty his heart and liberate his mind from the superfluities of this world and separate himself from its luxuries, only then will he completely accept G-d's Unity and rise to its level. I therefore set Abstinence as the ninth root of the general principles of the duties of the heart.
И когда я обратился мыслью к вопросу об истинном Едином, я увидел, что Его единство в целостном сердце не утвердится в душе верующего, когда его сердце опьянено вином любви к миру и склоняется к его животным вожделениям. Но если он постарается освободить своё сердце и очистить своё сокровенное от излишеств мира и воздержаться от его наслаждений, — совершенное единство утвердится в его сердце и он достигнет его уровня. Я сделал воздержание (пришут) девятым корнем в общей совокупности обязанностей сердец.
