וְכַאֲשֶׁר תִּקְרָא אָחִי אֶת סִפְרִי זֶה וְתַעֲמֹד עַל עִנְיָנוֹ קָחֵהוּ אֵלֶיךָ לְזִכָּרוֹן וְדוּן עַל נַפְשְׁךָ דִּין אֱמֶת וְהַפֵּךְ בּוֹ וְיַלְּדֵהוּ וְהַדְבֵּק אוֹתוֹ אֶל לִבְּךָ וּמַצְפּוּנְךָ. וְאִם תִּרְאֶה בּוֹ שׁוּם טָעוּת תַּקְּנֵהוּ אוֹ חִסָּרוֹן הַשְׁלִימֵהוּ וְכַוֵּן בּוֹ כַּוָּנַת הַמַּעֲשֶׂה בְּמָה שֶׁיּוֹרֶה עָלָיו וְיַנְהִיג אֵלָיו וְאַל תְּכַוֵּן לִקְנוֹת הַשֵּׁם וּלְהִתְפָּאֵר בְּחָכְמָתוֹ וְדוּנֵנִי לִזְכוּת בְּמָה שֶׁתַּשְׁקִיף עָלָיו מִטָּעוּת אוֹ מִשְּׁגִיאָה וּבְמָה שֶׁיֵּרָאֶה מִקֹּצֶר יָדִי בְּעִנְיָנָיו וּבְמִלָּיו מִפְּנֵי שֶׁמִּהַרְתִּי לְחַבְּרוֹ וְלֹא הִתְמַהְמַהְתִּי כִּי יָרֵאתִי שֶׁיְּמַהֲרֵנִי הַמָּוֶת וְיִמְנָעֵנִי מִמָּה שֶׁקִּוִּיתִי בּוֹ וְתֵדַע כִּי הַכֹּחַ הַבְּשָׂרִי קָצָר מֵהַשִּׂיג וְהַטֶּבַע הָאֱנוֹשִׁי חָסֵר מֵהַשְׁלִים כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמַר הַכָּתוּב (תהלים סב) אַךְ הֶבֶל בְּנֵי אָדָם כָּזָב בְּנֵי אִישׁ בְּמֹאזְנַיִם לַעֲלוֹת הֵמָּה מֵהֶבֶל יָחַד וּכְבָר הִקְדַּמְתִּי לְהִתְוַדּוֹת עַל קֹצֶר כֹּחִי בְּמָה שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ כֹּפֶר לְטָעוּת וְלִשְׁגִיאָה שֶׁתִּהְיֶינָה בּוֹ.
When, my brother, you have read this book, and comprehended its theme, take it for a remembrance. Bring your soul to a true judgement. Ponder it over, develop its thoughts. Cling it to your heart and mind. If you find an error in it, correct it; any omission, complete it. Have intent [when reading it] to follow its instruction and guidance. Do not have the aim of acquiring a name or to gain glory through its wisdom. Judge me leniently if you find any mistake, flaw, or whatever other shortcoming in its topics and words. For I hurried to compose it and did not tarry because I feared that death would overcome me and prevent me from my goal of completing it. You know how weak is the power of flesh to attain anything, and how deficient is man from fully grasping, as Scripture says: "Surely the sons of men are vanity; the sons of men are a lie; if they go up in the scales; they are altogether lighter than vanity" (Ps. 62:10). I have already confessed from the outset on my insufficient strength. Let this admission atone for the errors and flaws in it.
И когда ты, брат мой, прочитаешь эту мою книгу и постигнешь её содержание, прими её к себе для памяти, и суди свою душу справедливым судом, и углубляйся в неё, и извлекай из неё [выводы], и прилепи её к своему сердцу и сокровенному. И если ты увидишь в ней какую-либо ошибку — исправь её, или недостаток — восполни его. И стремись в ней к намерению деяния, к тому, на что она указывает и к чему ведёт. И не стремись к обретению славы и к кичению её мудростью. И суди меня снисходительно в том, что ты обнаружишь из ошибок или оплошностей, и в том, что проявится от моего бессилия в её вопросах и словах, — ибо я поспешил составить её и не медлил, ибо боялся, что смерть поспешит за мной и лишит меня того, на что я надеялся. И знай, что телесные силы недостаточны для постижения, и человеческая природа несовершенна для достижения полноты, как сказано в Писании (Теилим 62): «Лишь суета — сыны человеческие, ложь — сыны мужей; на весах они поднимутся — вместе легче пустоты». И я уже заранее признал свою слабость, что служит искуплением за ошибки и оплошности, которые могут быть в ней.
