וְרָאוּי שֶׁתֵּדַע כִּי כָל חוֹבוֹת הַלְּבָבוֹת וּמוּסְרֵי הַנְּפָשׁוֹת נִכְנָסִים תַּחַת אֵלֶּה הָעֲשָׂרָה שָׁרָשִׁים אֲשֶׁר חִבַּרְתִּי בַּסֵּפֶר הַזֶּה צִוּוּיֵיהֶם וְלָאוֵיהֶם כְּהַכְנָסַת הַרְבֵּה מִן הַמִּצְוֹת תַּחַת (ויקרא י״ט:י״ח) וְאָהַבְתָּ לְרֵעֲךָ כָּמוֹךָ וְתַחַת דִּבְרֵי הַכָּתוּב (תהלים טו) לֹא עָשָׂה לְרֵעֵהוּ רָעָה וְתַחַת מָה שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (שם לד) סוּר מֵרָע וַעֲשֵׂה טוֹב.
You should know that all the Duties of the Heart and all disciplines of the soul, whether positive or negative, fall within these ten roots which I have composed in this book, just like many of the commandments fall under the precepts of "love your fellow as yourself" (Levit. 19:18), and under "he did no evil to his fellow" (Ps. 15:3), and under "turn from evil and do good" (Ps. 34:15).
И тебе следует знать, что все обязанности сердец и нравоучения душ входят в эти десять корней, которые я составил в этой книге, — их повелительные и запретительные [заповеди], — подобно тому как множество заповедей входит в [заповедь] (Ваикра 19:18): «И люби ближнего твоего, как самого себя», и в слова Писания (Теилим 15): «Не делал ближнему своему зла», и в сказанное (там же, 34): «Удаляйся от зла и делай добро».
