וּמִפְּנֵי שֶׁחָכְמַת הַמִּצְוֹת שֶׁבַּתּוֹרָה עַל שְׁנֵי עִנְיָנִים הָא׳ מֵהֶם גָּלוּי וְהַשֵּׁנִי נִסְתָּר עִיַּנְתִּי בְּסִפְרֵי הַקַּדְמוֹנִים שֶׁהָיוּ אַחֲרֵי אַנְשֵׁי הַתַּלְמוּד אֲשֶׁר חִבְּרוּ בְּעִנְיְנֵי הַמִּצְוֹת חִבּוּרִים רַבִּים לַעֲמֹד מֵהֶם עַל חָכְמַת הָעִנְיָן הַנִּסְתָּר וְרָאִיתִי כִּי כָל מַה שֶׁכִּוְּנוּ לְפָרֵשׁ וּלְבָאֵר אֵינֶנּוּ יֹצֵא מֵא׳ מִשְּׁלֹשָׁה עִנְיָנִים:
As the science of the torah deals with two parts, external and inward commandments, I studied the books of our predecessors who lived after the [compilers of the] Talmud. They composed many works dealing with the precepts. In the expectation of learning from them the science of inward religion, I found, however, that all that they intended to explain and clarify fall into three categories:
