וְתָמַהְתִּי עַל זֶה תֵּמַהּ גְּדוֹלָה עַד שֶׁאָמַרְתִּי בְּלִבִּי שֶׁמָּא הַמִּין הַזֶּה מִן הַמִּצְוֹת אֵין אֲנַחְנוּ חַיָּבִין בּוֹ מִן הַתּוֹרָה אֶלָּא שֶׁחִיּוּבוֹ מִדֶּרֶךְ הַמּוּסָר לְהוֹרוֹת הַדֶּרֶךְ הַנְּכוֹנָה וְהַיְּשָׁרָה וְכָמוֹהוּ כְּמוֹ הַתּוֹסָפוֹת שֶׁהֵם רְשׁוּת שֶׁאֵין אֲנַחְנוּ נִתְבָּעִין בָּהֶם וְלֹא נֶעֱנָשִׁים אִם נִתְעַלֵּם מֵהֶם וְעַל כֵּן הִנִּיחוּ הַקַּדְמוֹנִים לְחַבְּרוֹ בְּסֵפֶר עַד שֶׁחִפַּשְׂתִּי עַל חוֹבוֹת הַלְּבָבוֹת מִן הַשֵּׂכֶל וּמִן הַכָּתוּב וּמִן הַקַּבָּלָה אִם אֲנַחְנוּ חַיָּבִים בָּהֶם אִם לָאו וּמְצָאתִים שֶׁהֵם יְסוֹדֵי כָּל הַמִּצְוֹת וְאִם יֶאֱרַע בָּהֶם שׁוּם הֶפְסֵד לֹא תִתָּכֵן לָנוּ מִצְוָה מִמִּצְוֹת הָאֵבָרִים:
I greatly wondered about this, and thought to myself, perhaps this class of duties is not obligatory from the torah but is only an ethical obligation the aim of which is to teach us the proper and just way. Possibly it belongs to the class of extra practices that are optional, for which we will not be held accountable for them nor will we be punished for neglecting them. And therefore, our predecessors omitted to write a special book on them. I investigated the Duties of the Heart from Reason, Scripture, and Tradition (talmud,midrash,etc.) to inquire whether or not they are obligatory and found that they form the foundation of all the precepts, and that if there is any deficiency in their observance, no external duties whatsoever can be properly fulfilled.
И я весьма удивился этому, пока не сказал себе в сердце: быть может, этот вид заповедей не является нашей обязанностью по Торе, а его обязательность — лишь от [правил] нравственности, указывающих верный и прямой путь, и он подобен добровольным дополнениям, за которые с нас не взыскивают и за пренебрежение которыми нас не наказывают. И потому предшественники оставили [решение] составить о нём книгу. Но когда я исследовал обязанности сердец с точки зрения разума, Писания и предания — обязаны ли мы их [исполнять] или нет, — я обнаружил, что они являются основой всех заповедей, и если случится в них какой-либо ущерб, ни одна заповедь из заповедей органов тела не будет нам засчитана.
