וְיָדַעְתִּי דַּעַת בְּרוּרָה כִּי חוֹבוֹת הָאֵבָרִים לֹא תִשְׁלַמְנָה כִּי אִם בִּרְצוֹן הַלֵּב וְחֵפֶץ הַנֶּפֶשׁ לַעֲשׂוֹתָם וְתַאֲוַת לִבֵּנוּ לִפְעֹל אוֹתָם. וְאִם יַעֲלֶה בְּמַחְשְׁבוֹתֵינוּ שֶׁאֵין לִבּוֹתֵינוּ חַיָּבִין לִבְחֹר בַּעֲבוֹדַת הַשֵּׁם וְלַחְפֹּץ בָּהּ יִסְתַּלֵּק מֵעַל אֵבָרֵינוּ חִיּוּב הַמִּצְוֹת שֶׁאָנוּ חַיָּבִין בָּהֶם מִפְּנֵי שֶׁאֵין מַעֲשֶׂה נִשְׁלָם מִבְּלִי חֵפֶץ הַנֶּפֶשׁ בּוֹ. וְכֵיוָן שֶׁנִּתְבָּרֵר כִּי הַבּוֹרֵא חִיֵּב אֶת אֵבָרֵינוּ בְּמִצְוֹתָיו. לֹא הָיָה נָכוֹן לְהַנִּיחַ נַפְשֵׁנוּ וְלִבֵּנוּ שֶׁהֵם מִבְחַר חֶלְקֵי עַצְמֵנוּ שֶׁלֹּא יְחַיְּבֵם בַּעֲבוֹדָתוֹ כְּפִי יְכָלְתָּם מִפְּנֵי שֶׁבָּהֶם גְּמַר הָעֲבוֹדָה וְעַל כֵּן נִתְחַיַּבְנוּ בְּחוֹבוֹת גְּלוּיֵינוּ וּמַצְפּוּנֵינוּ. כְּדֵי שֶׁתִּהְיֶה עֲבוֹדָתֵנוּ שְׁלֵמָה וּגְמוּרָה וְכוֹלֶלֶת מַצְפּוּנֵינוּ וּגְלוּיֵינוּ לַבּוֹרֵא יִתְבָּרַךְ:
I am certain that [even] the duties of the limbs cannot be performed properly unless they are accompanied by will of the heart, longing of the soul to do them, and desire of the heart to perform them. If it should enter our mind that we are under no obligation to choose the service of G-d and to yearn for it, then we would be exempt from the duties of the limbs for no act can be complete without the agreement of the soul. And since it is clear that the Creator has put us under obligation to perform the duties of the limbs, it would not be reasonable for us to suppose that our soul and heart, the choicest parts of our beings, should have been exempted from serving Him according to the extent of their ability, because their cooperation is required for the complete service of G-d. Therefore, it is clear that we are under obligation to perform outward and inner duties so that our service to the blessed Creator will be whole and complete, including both our inner and outer being.
И я ясно осознал, что обязанности органов тела не могут быть исполнены полностью без желания сердца и стремления души совершать их, и без влечения нашего сердца к их исполнению. И если мы помыслим, что наши сердца не обязаны избирать служение Г-споду и желать его, то тем самым с наших органов тела снимется обязанность заповедей, которые мы обязаны исполнять, — ибо никакое деяние не может быть совершенным без желания души [совершить] его. И коль скоро выяснилось, что Творец обязал наши органы тела Своими заповедями, было бы неверно оставить нашу душу и наше сердце — которые суть лучшие части нашего существа — без обязанности служить Ему по мере их возможностей, ибо именно в них завершение служения. И потому мы обязаны как в явном, так и в сокровенном, дабы наше служение было полным и совершенным, охватывающим и сокровенное, и явное наше, перед Творцом, да будет Он благословен.
