עַל כֵּן רָאִיתִי לְהַכְרִיחַ אֶת נַפְשִׁי לִסְבֹּל טֹרַח חִבּוּר הַסֵּפֶר הַזֶּה וּלְבָאֵר עִנְיָנוֹ בְּכָל לָשׁוֹן שֶׁאוּכַל וּבְכָל מְלִיצָה שֶׁתִּזְדַּמֵּן לִי שֶׁיּוּבַן הָעִנְיָן מֵהֶם וְאֶזְכֹּר מִתּוֹלְדוֹת חוֹבוֹת הַלְּבָבוֹת מָה שֶׁיָּבֹא לְיָדִי וְלֹא אֶטְרַח לַהֲבִיאָם כֻּלָּם כְּדֵי שֶׁלֹּא יֶאֱרַךְ הַסֵּפֶר אַךְ אַזְכִּיר מִן הַדְּבָרִים הַצְּרִיכִים לְכָל שֹׁרֶשׁ מִשָּׁרָשָׁיו בַּשַּׁעַר שֶׁלּוֹ מָה שֶׁרָאוּי לוֹ וּבָאֱלֹהִים הָאֶחָד הָאֱמֶת אֵעָזֵר וְעָלָיו אֶבְטַח וּמִמֶּנּוּ אֶשְׁאַל לְהוֹרוֹת אוֹתִי בּוֹ אֶת הַדֶּרֶךְ הַיְּשָׁרָה אֲשֶׁר הוּא רוֹצֶה בָהּ וְשֶׁהִיא מְקֻבֶּלֶת בְּעֵינָיו בְּדִבּוּר וּבְמַעֲשֵׂה בַּסֵּתֶר וּבַגָּלוּי:
Therefore, I found myself obligated to force my soul to bear the task of composing this book, and resolved to expound its topics with whatever language or analogy would make the matters readily understandable. Among all the duties of the heart, I will only mention those which suggest themselves to me, and will not trouble to expound all of them, so that the book will not be too long. I will, however, cite among the things necessary for the clarification of each of its roots in the section allocated to it. And from G-d, the true Unity, may I receive aid. On Him, I place my trust and to Him I ask to teach me the right path which He desires, and which is pleasing and acceptable to Him, in word and deed, in inner and outer conduct.
Поэтому я решил принудить свою душу вынести труд составления этой книги и разъяснить её содержание всяким языком, каким смогу, и всяким выражением, какое подвернётся мне, лишь бы суть была понятна из них. И я упомяну из производных обязанностей сердец то, что придёт мне на ум, и не буду стремиться привести их все, дабы книга не стала чрезмерно пространной. Но упомяну из необходимого для каждого корня из её корней в надлежащем разделе то, что ему подобает. И у Б-га единого и истинного я буду искать помощи, и на Него буду уповать, и у Него буду просить, чтобы Он направил меня в этом на прямой путь, который Ему угоден и который принят в Его глазах, — в слове и в деле, в сокровенном и в явном.
