וְכַאֲשֶׁר הֲבִינוֹתִי מָה שֶׁהוּא עוֹבֵר עַל בְּנֵי אָדָם שֶׁהֵם מִתְעַלְּמִים וּמְקַצְּרִים בְּמָה שֶׁהֵם חַיָּבִים בּוֹ מֵעֲבוֹדַת הָאֵל יִתְבָּרַךְ וְהַדֶּרֶךְ שֶׁיְּכוֹלִין לְתַקֵּן בָּהּ מְעֻוָּתָם וְקִצּוּרָם הִיא הַתְּשׁוּבָה וּבַקָּשַׁת הַכַּפָּרָה. שַׂמְתִּי הַתְּשׁוּבָה שֹׁרֶשׁ שְׁבִיעִי לַכְּלָל מֵחוֹבוֹת הַלְּבָבוֹת.
When I reflected on what happens to human beings, that they neglect and fall short of what service they owe to the blessed Creator, and the path with which they can rectify their crookedness and shortcomings, namely repentance and beseeching for forgiveness, I therefore placed Repentance as the seventh root of the general principles of the duties of the heart.
И когда я понял то, что происходит с людьми, — что они пренебрегают и не исполняют должным образом то, чем обязаны в служении Б-гу, да будет Он благословен, — и что путь, которым они могут исправить свою искривлённость и свои упущения, — это раскаяние и просьба об искуплении, — я сделал раскаяние (тшува) седьмым корнем в общей совокупности обязанностей сердец.
