וְכַאֲשֶׁר חִפַּשְׂתִּי לְהַשִּׂיג אֲמִתַּת מָה שֶׁאָנוּ חַיָּבִים לַה׳ יִתְבָּרַךְ מִן הַחוֹבוֹת הַנִּגְלוֹת וְהַנִּסְתָּרוֹת וְיָדַעְתִּי כִּי לֹא יִתָּכֵן לְקַיֵּם אוֹתָן עַד שֶׁנַּחְשֹׁב עִם נַפְשׁוֹתֵינוּ בַּעֲבוּרָן לָאֵל יִתְבָּרֵךְ וְשֶׁנְּדַקְדֵּק עֲלֵיהֶם. שַׂמְתִּי הַחֶשְׁבּוֹן עִם הַנֶּפֶשׁ שֹׁרֶשׁ שְׁמִינִי לַכְּלָל מֵחוֹבוֹת הַלְּבָבוֹת.
When I sought to grasp what our inner and outer duties to G-d truly are, and realized that it is impossible for us to fulfill them until we bring ourselves to an accounting on them before G-d and are meticulous in this, I made the spiritual accounting the eighth root of the general principles of the duties of the heart.
И когда я стал искать, как достичь истинного исполнения того, чем мы обязаны Г-споду, да будет Он благословен, — из обязанностей явных и сокрытых, — и узнал, что невозможно их выполнить, пока мы не произведём самоотчёт (хешбон а-нефеш) ради Б-га, да будет Он благословен, и не будем строго следить за их исполнением, — я сделал самоотчёт восьмым корнем в общей совокупности обязанностей сердец.
