ענין נפילת אפים ה וי״ג מדות: והנה נתחברו לזה עוד קצת ענינים פרטים לעורר הרחמים ולהרבות הברכה. ומכלל זה ענין הוידוי הזכרת הי״ג מדות ונפילת אפים והיינו כי הוידוי הוא לסתם פי המקטרגים ולא יגרמו לו שתדחה תפלתו ח״ו. הזכרת הי״ג מדות זה כחם שיתפוס האדון ב״ה במדת רחמנותו ובשליטת רוממותו יעבור על פשע ויחון אף בהעדר הזכות. ונפילת אפים אף היא כניעה גדולה לפניו ית׳ אשר כחה גדול לשתתפייס מדה״ד ויכמרו הרחמים הגדולים ויהיה השפע נמשך בריבוי וברוחה. ואולם זה הוא הסדר הכולל שעליו נוסדה התפלה ויש פרטים רבים לכלל זה שבהם תלוים פרטי הסדר במזמורים ובשאר הפסוקים שנתקנו כל דבר במקומו:
Regarding the [supplication] and the thirteen attributes: And see that a few other specific matters were connected to this to arouse His mercy and to enhance the blessing. And included in this is the matter of the confession, the mention of the thirteen attributes [of mercy] and the falling on the face (the supplication or tachanun). And that is because the confession is to seal the mouths of the accusers, such that they do not cause one's prayer to be pushed off, God forbid. The power of the mention of the thirteen attributes is that the Master, blessed be, grabs the trait of His mercy and - through the control of His preeminence - passes over transgression and grants grace, even in the absence of merit. And the falling on the face is also a great submission in front of Him, may He be blessed, which has great power in appeasing the trait of [strict] justice, such that great mercy is aroused and [His] flow is brought down with plenitude and largesse. However this is the general order upon which prayer is based. Yet there are many details to this outline, upon which the particulars of the order - such as the hymns and the other verses - depend, as each thing was ordained in its place.
Суть падения ниц (Нефилат Апаим) и Тринадцати Качеств Милосердия: К этому присоединяются ещё некоторые частные предметы — для пробуждения милосердия и умножения благословения. В их числе: исповедь (Видуй), упоминание Тринадцати Качеств и падение ниц. Исповедь — для того чтобы заградить уста обвинителям и чтобы они не стали причиной отвержения молитвы, упаси Бог. Упоминание Тринадцати Качеств — его сила в том, чтобы Господь, да будет Он благословен, прибегнул к качеству Своего милосердия и к власти Своего величия — прощал грех и миловал даже при отсутствии заслуги. Падение ниц — это также великое смирение перед Ним, да будет Он благословен, сила которого велика для того, чтобы качество суда умирилось и пробудилось великое милосердие, и изобилие нисходило в изобилии и щедрости. Таков общий порядок, на котором основана молитва. Есть множество частностей к этому общему, от которых зависят частности порядка в псалмах и прочих стихах, установленных каждый на своём месте.
