On Shabbat, the [wording of] kiddush is, “who has commanded us with His commandments”; whereas on holidays, it is, “who has chosen us [banu].” For Shabat is fixed and solid, while the holidays are [determined] according to the Jewish people, when the Jewish people sanctify the designated times. And that is [the meaning of], “who has chosen us [which can also be read as, through us]”: When we choose the day of the designated time, it is so. And that is [the meaning of] the hint in the verse: These are the designated times of the Lord, such that you shall proclaim them [otam] (Leviticus 23:2). Do not read, otam, but rather, you [atem] (Rosh Hashanah 24a). The hint is that when you fix the designated times, I [God] choose those designated times.
