ולקבל תנאי הא', מחויב כל תלמיד להרגיש עצמו שהוא הקטן שבכל החברים, ואז יוכל לקבל הערכת הרוממות מכולם. כי אין גדול יכול לקבל מקטן ממנו ומכל_שכן שיתפעל מדבריו, ורק הקטן מתפעל מהערכת הגדול. וכנגד תנאי הב', מחויב כל תלמיד להרים מעלת כל חבר ולחבבו, כאילו היה גדול הדור, ואז תפעל עליו הסביבה כמו שהיתה סביבה גדולה כראוי. כי רוב בנין חשוב יותר מרוב מנין.
To accept the first condition, every student much feel himself to be the least of all his companions. Then can he accept the perception of loftiness from them all as a greater cannot receive from one lesser than he, or even be influenced by his words. It is only the lesser that is moved by the appreciation of the greater one. According to the second condition, every student must consider the virtue of any companion highly and hold him dear as if he were the greater person in the generation. Then society will influence him as if it were sufficiently large because structural majority is more important than a numerical majority (v. Mishna, Ohalot 2:1).
И для выполнения первого условия каждый ученик обязан чувствовать себя самым малым из всех товарищей, и тогда он сможет получить оценку величия от них всех. Ибо великий не может получить от меньшего, чем он, и тем более не может быть впечатлён его словами, — лишь малый впечатляется оценкой великого. А для выполнения второго условия каждый ученик обязан возвышать достоинства каждого товарища и ценить его, как если бы тот был величайшим в поколении, и тогда окружение будет воздействовать на него, как если бы оно было достаточно большим окружением. Ибо качество состава важнее количества.
