וְיֵשׁ חִלּוּקִים בְּעִנְיַן קַטְנּוּת וְהַכְנָעַת הַגָּדוֹל אֵצֶל הַקָּטָן, כְּדֵי לְקַבֵּל אוֹרוֹ כַּנַּ"ל, כִּי הַכֹּל לְפִי הָעִנְיָן: לִפְעָמִים הוּא בִּתְנוּעָה בְּעָלְמָא, וְלִפְעָמִים צָרִיךְ לֵילֵךְ וְלִנְסֹעַ אֵלָיו, וְהַכֹּל לְפִי הָעִנְיָן. כְּמוֹ נֵר שֶׁכָּבָה, כְּשֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ קְצָת אוֹר, עֲדַיִן יְכוֹלִין לְהַדְלִיקוֹ, רַק עַל־יְדֵי מַה שֶּׁמְּקָרְבִין אוֹתוֹ קְצָת לַנֵּר הַדּוֹלֵק, דְּהַיְנוּ שֶׁאוֹחֲזִין אוֹתוֹ לְמַטָּה אֵצֶל נֵר הַדּוֹלֵק, כַּיָּדוּעַ בְּחוּשׁ, וְזֶה מֵחֲמַת שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ עֲדַיִן קְצָת אוֹר, אֲבָל כְּשֶׁאֵין בּוֹ שׁוּם אוֹר, אֵין יְכוֹלִין לְהַדְלִיקוֹ מֵרָחוֹק, כִּי אִם כְּשֶׁמְּקָרְבִין אוֹתוֹ מַמָּשׁ לְהָאוֹר אוֹ לְהֵפֶךְ וְכוּ':
2. And the ways in which the greater person diminishes and subordinates himself to the smaller one, so that the latter might receive his light, are varied. It all depends on the situation. Sometimes, it takes a mere motion. Other times, he has to go and travel to him. It all depends on the situation. It is like a candle that blew out. We know empirically that as long as there is a bit of a glow, it is still possible to light it just by bringing it somewhat closer to a burning candle, i.e., by holding it down below, near the lit candle. This is because it still has a bit of a glow. However, when the glow is completely gone, one cannot light it from a distance but has to bring it right next to the fire; or the reverse….
2. И пути, которыми больший умаляет и подчиняет себя меньшему, чтобы тот мог принять его свет, — разнообразны. Всё зависит от обстоятельств. Иногда достаточно одного движения. А иногда ему нужно пойти и поехать к нему. Всё зависит от обстоятельств. Это как свеча, которая погасла. Мы знаем из опыта, что пока есть хоть немного тления, ещё возможно зажечь её, лишь приблизив её немного к горящей свече, то есть удерживая её внизу, возле зажжённой свечи. Потому что в ней ещё есть немного тления. Но когда тление полностью исчезло, нельзя зажечь её издали, а нужно поднести её вплотную к огню; или наоборот….
