ואתחנן אל ה׳ בעת ההיא וגו׳ אתה החילות וגו׳ את גדלך ואת ידך החזקה וגו׳ ופירש״י אף על פי שיש להם לצדיקים לתלות במעשיהם הטובים אין מבקשים אלא מתנת חנם שאין חנון בכל מקום אלא מתנת חנם להבין זאת מפני מה נקבע כן בדעת הצדיקים באמת שמצד מעשיהם אין להם לבקש רק מתנת חנם:
“And I pleaded with the Lord at that time… You have begun… Your greatness and Your strong hand…” – and Rashi explains: Even though the righteous could rely on their good deeds, they ask only for an undeserved gift, for the word chanun (gracious) always implies a free gift. To understand this: why has it truly become established in the minds of the righteous that, despite their deeds, they should request only a free gift?
«И я молил (ваэтханан) Господа в то время» и далее. «Ты начал» и далее — «величие Твоё и руку Тв��ю крепкую» и далее. И объяснил Раши: хотя ес��ь у пра��едников на что опереться — на свои добрые дела, — просят они лишь даров ��илости (матнат хинам), ибо «ханун» (милостивый) везде означае�� лишь дар ��езвозмездный. Чтобы понять это — почем�� так установл��но в сознании праведников поистине: что со стороны своих деяний им подобает просить лишь дар мило��ти?
