אֵינוֹ אוֹמֵר אָז תָּבִין פִילוֹסוֹפְיָה, אָז תָּבִין תְּכוּנָה, אָז תָּבִין רְפוּאָה, אָז תָּבִין דִּינִים, אָז תָּבִין הֲלָכוֹת, אֶלָּא אָז תָּבִין יִרְאַת ה'! הֲרֵי לְךָ, שֶׁלְּהָבִין הַיִּרְאָה צָרִיךְ לְבַקֵּשׁ אוֹתָהּ כַּכֶּסֶף וּלְחַפֵּשׂ אוֹתָהּ כַּמַּטְמוֹנִים. הֲדַי אֵפוֹא בְּמָה שֶׁמְּלֻמָּד לָנוּ מֵאֲבוֹתֵינוּ וּבַמָּה שֶׁמְּפֻרְסָם אֵצֶל כָּל בֶּן דַּעַת דֶּרֶךְ כְּלָל?
He didn't say "then you will understand philosophy; then you will understand astronomy; then you will understand medicine; then you will understand legal decisions; then you will understand laws" - but rather "then you will understand fear of G-d"! Behold from here, that to understand the fear of G-d one must seek it like silver and search for it like buried treasure. Is it sufficient then what we have been taught by our forefathers and what is familiar to every observant person in a general sense?
Он не говорит: «тогда постигнешь философию», «тогда постигнешь астрономию», «тогда постигнешь медицину», «тогда постигнешь законы», «тогда постигнешь галахот», — но «тогда поймёшь трепет пред Господом»! Вот тебе доказательство, что для постижения трепета нужно искать его как серебро и разыскивать как сокровища. Так достаточно ли того, чему мы обучены от наших отцов и что известно каждому разумному человеку в общих чертах?
