4 הסיבה השלישית: כאשר לא כל הדברים הללו הם כחיצוניותם, אלא חלקם כחיצוניותם וחלקם משל שיש לו תוך, או ששני המשפטים הנראים כסותרים הם משלים, אלא שאם הובנו לפי פשוטם הרי הם סותרים או מנוגדים.
Third cause: The passages in question are not all to be taken literally: some only are to be understood in their literal sense, while in others figurative language is employed, which includes another meaning besides the literal one: or, in the apparently inconsistent passages, figurative language is employed which, if taken literally, would seem to be contradictories or contraries.
Третья причина: когда не все эти вещи таковы, каковы они по внешнему смыслу; но часть из них — по внешнему смыслу, а часть — притча, у которой есть внутреннее содержание; или же оба утверждения, кажущиеся противоречащими, — притчи, но если их понять по простому смыслу, то они противоречат или не соответствуют друг другу.
