המונח אדםשלוש משמעויות1 רב־משמעיות "אדם". א) הוא שמו של אדם הראשון, (והוא שם) גזור, כמו שנאמר בפסוקים (ראו בראשית ב,ז) שהוא נגזר מ"אדמה". ב) והוא גם שם המין: "לֹא יָדוֹן רוּחִי בָאָדָם" (בראשית ו,ג), "מִי יוֹדֵעַ רוּחַ בְּנֵי הָאָדָם" (קהלת ג,כא), "וּמוֹתַר הָאָדָם מִן הַבְּהֵמָה אָיִן" (שם שם,יט). ג) והוא שם להמון, כלומר לפשוטי העם להוציא המיוחדים (שבהם): "גַּם בְּנֵי אָדָם גַּם בְּנֵי אִישׁ" (תהילים מט,ג).
THE homonymous term adam is in the first place the name of the first man, being, as Scripture indicates, derived from adamah, “earth.” Next, it means “mankind,” as “My spirit shall not strive with man (adam)” (Gen. 6:3). Again “Who knoweth the spirit of the children of man (adam)” (Eccles. 3:21); “so that a man (adam) has no pre-eminence above a beast” (Eccles. 3:19). Adam. signifies also “the multitude,” “the lower classes” as opposed to those distinguished from the rest, as “Both low (bene adam) and high (bene ish)” (Ps. 49:3).

а) Это имя первого Адама (и это имя) производное, как сказано в стихах (см. Берешит 2:7), что оно производно от «адама» (земля).
б) И это также имя вида: «не будет дух Мой судиться с адамом» (Берешит 6:3), «кто знает дух сыновей адама» (Коэлет 3:21), «и превосходство адама над скотом — нет» (там же 3:19).
в) И это имя для множества, то есть для простого народа, исключая особых (среди них): «и сыновья адама, и сыновья иш» (Теилим 49:3).
ובמשמעות השלישית הזאת: "וַיִּרְאוּ בְנֵי הָאֱלֹהִים אֶת בְּנוֹת הָאָדָם" (בראשית ו,ב), "אָכֵן כְּאָדָם תְּמוּתוּן" (תהילים פב,ז).
It is in this third signification that it occurs in the verses, “The sons of the higher order (Elohim) saw the daughters of the lower order (adam)” (Gen. 6:2); and “Forsooth! as the humble man (adam) you shall die” (Ps. 82:7).
