Nefesh HaChayim, An Introduction by the Author's Son

A central feature of humility is not to be moved by one’s good actions nor by the merit of the high standing that one has achieved. And to the extent that one’s actions and standing grow great, his intellect increasingly recognizes God’s (blessed be His name) greatness. In a similar way the spirit-Ruakh of God-Elohi”m increases his ability to be aware of his lack of abilities, and silences the sensation of the greatness of his own standing. And when he observes that others find it valuable to honor him, it’s too much24Heb.: mitz-ta-meik—paraphrasing Shabbat 37b and the behavior is repugnant to him[*], and reminds him of his lack of abilities, and to belittle himself so that his heart/mind doesn’t become proud (as we found in the case of Rav—Yoma 87a—when he saw large groups of people following him to honor him).
