היה אוהב תוכחת מוסר. וכל דבריו היו כאש. והוה להיט מפומיה שלהבת י"ק באהבה. ורשפי אש ביראה. וכל אזן שמעה היה נמס לבבו כהמס דונג. ונמשך אחרי מיליו דחסדאין באגדתא דהוה דריש בפרקיה. ומענותנותי' לא מלאו לבו להוכיח לברייתא. והוכיח במישור לעצמו בכל דבריו. והיה כבא ללמד ונמצא למד* ורובי מוסריו היו להשפיל גבהות הלב:
He loved ethical admonition25Heb.: toe-kh’khote moosar, and all of his words were like fire. They flamed from his mouth [like] the flame of God-Y”H with love, and flashes of fire with awe/fear26Paraphrasing Shir Hashirim 8:6. Anyone who heard them, his hearts/minds melted like liquefying wax, and they were drawn after his charming words27Paraphrasing Gittin 7a of Aggad’ta that he would expound from time to time. And as a result of his humility he didn’t find the courage to admonish others—he honestly admonished himself with all his words. And when he started to teach, the result was that he learned[*]. The majority of his admonishments were to reduce inflated ego28Heb.: l’hahsh-peel gahv-hoot ha-lev xxviii.
Он любил упрёк мусара, и все его слова были как огонь. И выходило из его уст пламя «йуд-кей» с любовью, и искры огня — с трепетом. И всякое ухо, что слышало, — таяло его сердце, как тает воск, и тянулось вслед его словам милосердия в агаде, которую он разъяснял в своей главе. И по его смирению сердце его не наполнялось (не решалось) упрекать творения, и он упрекал прямо самого себя во всех своих словах. И он был как пришедший учить и оказался учащимся*; и большинство его наставлений было — принижать гордыню сердца.
