וכד היה כבר עשרים וחמש. הוה גמיר בכלא תלמודא. ופוסקים ראשונים ואחרונים. והיה לומד תורה עם אחיו הגאון וצדיק דמי לבר אלהין מוה' שלמר זלמן נ"ע* ומה טוב ונעים היה שבת אחים גם יחד בתורה ועבודה. ושניהם כאחד למדו תורה מהרב הדומה למלאך ה' צבאות עיר וקדיש מן שמיא רבינו הגדול רשכב"ה הגאון מרנא ורבנא אליהו החסיד זצוק"ל מק"ק ווילנא. והוא ז"ל האציל מרוחו עליהם. רוח חכמה וכו'. אשרי עין ראתה כל אלה. הרואים ראו ושמחו. והשומעים למשמע אזן תאבה נפש:
By the time he was twenty-five he had completed the entire Talmud, and early and late po-skim, and he would learn Torah with his brother—the genius who is like the residents of heaven—our teacher Rav Shlomo Zalman[*] (his resting place is in Eden). How pleasant was the joining of brothers together13Paraphrasing T’hillim 133:1 in Torah and service. The two of them, as one, learned Torah from the rabbi who resembles God-YHV”H-Tz’va-ote’s angel, spiritual guardian and holy from heaven, our great rabbi, the rabbi of all who live in exile, the genius, our master and teacher Eliyahu, the pious (may the memory of the righteous and holy be a blessing) of the holy community of Vilna. And he (OBM) emanated from his spirit-Ruakh upon them a spirit-Ruakh of wisdom14Paraphrasing Bamidbar 11:17… . Fortunate is the eye that saw all of this15Paraphrasing the Yom Kippur Mahkhzore, regarding those who witnessed the service in the Beit Ha-mikdash. Those who saw, looked and rejoiced. And those who heard with their ears, their souls-Neffesh craved more.
И когда ему было уже двадцать пять, он был обучен всему Талмуду и постановляющим (посаким) ранним и поздним. И учил Тору со своим братом — гаоном и праведником, подобным сыну Б-жьих (т.е. выдающимся), мох' Шломо-Залманом, נ"ע*; и как хорошо и приятно было — пребывание братьев вместе в Торе и служении. И оба они вместе учили Тору у раввина, подобного ангелу Г-спода Воинств, пробуждённого и освящённого с Небес — у нашего великого учителя, רשכב"ה, гаона марaна ве-рабана Элиягу хасида, зцук"л, из святой общины Вильна. И он, ז"ל, излил на них от своего духа — дух мудрости и т.д. Счастлив глаз, видевший всё это: видевшие — видели и радовались, а у слышащих — при слухе желала Душа.
