The matter of involvement with Torah for its own sake— The clear truth, is that “for its own sake” does not mean “attachment” as most of the world today hypothesizes. For our rabbis (OBM) stated in the midrash (Shokheir Tov) that King Dovid requested of Him (may He be blessed) that one who is involved with T’hillim should be considered by Him as if he was involved in [the laws of] skin lesions and habitations963Heb.: n’ga-im v’aw-haw-lote, because the involvement in the legal discussions of the Sha”s with depth and effort is a matter much more sublime and beloved before Him (blessed be He) than the recitation of T’hillim.
And if we should say that the definition of “for its own sake” is specifically “attachment”, and on this only hangs the entire matter of involvement with Torah, surely there is no more wonderful attachment than the recitation of T’hillim all day long.
And also, who knows whether the Holy One (blessed be He) agreed with him regarding this, for we haven’t found in their (OBM) words what response He (blessed be He) gave him to his request (as we found in Bava Batra 17a: “the other explains this to mean that he is praying for mercy”).
And also, for the matter of attachment it should be sufficient with one tractate or chapter, or one mishna— that he should be involved just with it for his entire life, with attachment. And we didn’t find that our rabbis (OBM) agreed, for they stated (Sukka 28a) about Rabbee Yokhanan ben Za-kai that “he never stopped learning scripture, mishna…, discussions of oral law and midrashic sources…964Heb.: mikra, mishna, ha-la-khote v’ah-ga-dote”, and this is specifically because he constantly kept them from leaving his heart/mind, for even at that point he hadn’t completed his obligation of involvement with Torah for its own sake via what he learned until then, and for that reason he was diligent all his days to add lessons constantly, from day to day and from hour to hour.
And in Mishlei Rabbta, chapter 10: “Rabbee Yishmael stated: ‘Observe how trying the Day of Judgment is, for in the future the Holy One (blessed be He) will judge the entire world…, one who comes and who has mikra at hand but doesn’t have mishna at hand, the Holy One (blessed be He) turns His face away from him and the jailers of Gehinnom overcome him…, and they take him and cast him into Gehinnom. One who comes and has at hand two or three sidras965A sidra is one of the six parts of the Mishna., the Holy One (blessed be He) says to him: ‘My child, why didn’t you learn all the legal discussions?’ One who has the legal discussions at hand comes before Him, He says to him: ‘The law of the Kohanim, why didn’t you learn that, for there is within it…’. One who has the law of the Kohanim at hand, the Holy One (blessed be He) says to him: ‘My child, why didn’t you learn the five books of Torah, for within them are the reading of the Sh’ma, t’fillin and m’zooza?’ One who has the five books of Torah at hand comes, the Holy One (blessed be He) says to him: ‘Why didn’t you learn the midrashic stories966Heb.: ha-ga-da…?’ One who has the midrashic stories at hand comes, the Holy One (blessed be He) says to him: ‘Why didn’t you learn the derivations of the oral law967Heb.: talmood…? One who has the derivations of the oral law at hand comes, the Holy One (blessed be He) says to him: ‘You availed and involved yourself with the derivations of the oral law; did you delve into the Vehicle968Heb.: tzee-pee-ta ba-mehr-ka-va…? My throne of glory—describe its structure…, khashmal—describe its structure, and in how many directions does it turn itself…”—refer there at length [for more details].
And we can hypothesize also in this way, that after all, how many myriad of legal requirements are in the Sha”s, that during the moment that a person is involved with them, he must concentrate and delve his thoughts and rational mind into their physical aspects, for example details of specific sacrificial offerings and the timing details of the menstrual cycle969Heb.: kee-neen oo-pit-khei needa, for they [emphatic] are the main body of law. Or the negotiation process to determine the law in the Sha”s, and the principle of awarding a judgment when a cheater could have presented a patently winning claim and didn’t970Heb.: meego shel ra-ma-oot. And it’s almost impossible that he would also have, then, perfect attachment as it deserves.
