Nefesh HaChayim, Reb Itzele's Long Annotation

For the primary abode of the evil inclination is in the heart/ mind, and heart/mind is fire. And when the heart/mind burns a “foreign fire” that God did not command, the pride and haughtiness of the heart/mind becomes an abomination to God. Then, from the fire of pride he becomes thirsty for varieties of appetites (heaven save us!). And as is the manner of those who are thirsty to quench their thirst with water, in the same way he invents ways to quench his appetites’ desires with the element of water that’s in the brain, to invent thoughts how to actualize the appetites of his heart/ mind, as in the context that’s written (Yeshayahu 57:20): “There is no peace for the wicked, and whose waters disgorge mire and mud”. This refers to the foul, stinking waters that he brings down from his brain, his evil thoughts and reflections. And they arouse for him the element of Wind from the two “wings” of the lungs that sit over the heart, to emit words of evil speech, gossip, scoffing and others like that. The element of Dust is a vessel that expresses the powers of the three elements, and it serves to reveal the actions of the Fire, Wind and Water. Being that no one dies with even half of his desires fulfilled, for that reason he becomes depressed per the nature of the Dust.
