"ביום טובה – היה בטוב, וביום רעה – ראה: גם את זה לעומת זה עשה האלהים" וגו' (קהלת ז יד). זה הפסוק אמר שלמה המלך על מה שראה, אשר כל מה שנברא בעולם – הכל זה כנגד זה. כיצד? יש בעולם טובה, כנגד הטוב יש רעה. יש אור בעולם, כנגד זה יש חושך ואפילה. בעולם יש ימים ונהרות, כנגד זה יש יבשה. יש מדבר ויש יישוב. יש הרים וגבעות, יש גאיות ועמקים. ויש חמימות ויש קרירות. בענין זה נברא הכל, ובכל אחד ואחד יש בו טובה ורעה. וכל חכם לב נוטל מכל אחד ואחד מה שיש לו הנאה ממנו. כגון: האור טוב יותר מן החושך, אך בחושך יש טובה שבלילה יש מנוח לכל לישן, מה שאין כן ביום. ובחושך אדם נמלט מאויביו הבאים עליו. ובענין זה יש בכל דבר ודבר, והכל זה לעומת זה. וכן האדם נברא בענין זה שכל מידותיו ושיטותיו – הכל זה לעומת זה, כגון: הגאוה והענוה, היגון והשמחה. ובכל מידה ומידה – יש בה צדדין המרחיקין אותו מן הדרך הטובה והישרה, ועל זה נאמר: "יעזוב רשע דרכו" וגו' (ישעיהו נה ז). ויש בכל מידה – צדדין אשר בהן מתקרב הנבון והמשכיל לעבודת השם. ועבור אשר ראינו כי הצדדין רבים בכל מידה, לכן באנו לסדר המידות בדרך קצרה, לעשות סימנים. ויהיו הסימנים הללו סדורים בפיך, ותהיה מורגל בהם. ואם תהיה בענין שיביאך אל הגאוה – יזכירוך הסימנים הללו להשפיל רוחך. כי תחשוב: כמה נתגאו בעולם בגאוה ובשררה, ונשכחו כלא היו, והיכן הם? לכן תידבק בענוה.
"So in a time of good fortune enjoy the good fortune; and in a time of misfortune, reflect: The one no less than the other was God’s doing" (Ecclesiastes 7:14). This verse said King Solomon about what he saw, that all that was created in the world - everything is against each other. how? There is good in the world, there is evil against good. There is light in the world, against it there is darkness and gloom. In the world, there are days and rivers, against it there is land. There is a desert and there is a settlement. There are mountains and hills, there are ravines and valleys. And there is warmth and there is coolness. In this matter everything was created, and in each and every one there is good and evil in it. And every wise heart takes from each and every one what he enjoys. Such as: Light is better than darkness, but in darkness there is a good that at night there is rest for all to sleep, which is not the case during the day. And in the darkness a man fled from his enemies coming upon him. And in this matter there is in everything and anything, and everything is against each other. And man was created in this matter that all his virtues and methods - everything against each other, such as: pride and humility, grief and joy. And in every quality and quality - there is a side to it that distances it from the good and righteous way, and about this, it is said: "Let the wicked give up his ways" (Isaiah 55:7). And there is in every quality - a side in which the wise and educated approach to the work of Hashem. And for which we have seen that the sidelines are many in every quality, therefore we have come to order the measures in a short way, to make signs. And these signs shall be in your mouth, and you shall be accustomed to them. And if you are in a matter that will bring you to pride - remind yourself of these signs to humble your spirit. So that you will think: How proud were they in the world of pride and authority, and forgotten as if they were not, and where are they? Therefore stick to humility.
«В день добра — будь в добре, а в день зла — смотри: также и это против того сделал Бог» и т. д. (Коэлет 7:14). Этот стих сказал царь Шломо о том, что видел: что всё, что сотворено в мире, — всё это напротив этого. Как? Есть в мире добро — напротив добра есть зло. Есть в мире свет — напротив этого есть тьма и мрак. В мире есть моря и реки — напротив этого есть суша. Есть пустыня и есть обитаемое место. Есть горы и холмы, есть долины и низины. И есть тепло и есть прохлада. В этом устроении сотворено всё, и в каждом и каждом есть в нём добро и зло. И всякий мудрый сердцем берёт от каждого и каждого то, в чём ему есть польза. Например: свет лучше тьмы, однако во тьме есть добро — что ночью есть покой всякому спящему, чего нет днём. И во тьме человек спасается от врагов, приходящих на него. И в таком устроении есть в каждой вещи и вещи, и всё это одно напротив другого. Так же и человек создан в таком устроении, что все его мидот и его пути — всё это одно напротив другого, например: Гаава и Анавah, печаль и Симха. И в каждой миде — есть в ней стороны, отдаляющие его от пути доброго и прямого, и об этом сказано: «Оставит злодей путь свой» и т. д. (Йешаяху 55:7). И есть в каждой миде — стороны, которыми разумный и понимающий приближается к служению Имени. И поскольку мы видели, что стороны многочисленны в каждой миде, потому пришли мы упорядочить мидот кратким путём, сделать признаки. И будут эти признаки устроены в устах твоих, и будешь ты приучен к ним. И если окажешься ты в таком деле, что приведёт тебя к Гаава, — напомнят тебе эти признаки, чтобы унизить дух твой. Ибо подумаешь: сколько возгордились в мире Гаава и владычеством, и забыты, как будто не были, — и где они? Поэтому прилепись к Анавah.
