שני הרהורים יש לו לאדם יומם ולילה הרהורי אשה והרהורי ממון ובשבילם הוא נותן נפשו ועוד הרהורים אחרים הקנאה והשנאה והגאוה והתאוה והנאת בנים וגעגוע בנים ונשים שחוק חברים וטיולים וחדושי דברים בטלים וכל אלה גורמים לבטל תורה לכך נאמר בכל לבבך ובכל נפשך אצל העבודה והאהבה כלומר עבוד ואהוב את המקום. ובכל מאדך ובכל נכסיך לא נאמר אלא מאדך בכל מדה ומדה שהוא מודד לך גבה ממך ממון אל תהרהר אחריו כי הכל לטובה. וזהו שנאמר (תהלים סב יג) ולך ה' חסד כי אתה תשלם לאיש כמעשהו אל תקרי מעשהו אלא ממעשהו. אם בעל בנים הוא גובה בניו ואם הוא עשיר גובה את עושרו בחייו. וזהו חסד גדול שמשלם לו גמולו בעוה"ז חיי הבל כדי להביאו לעולם הבא. ד"א ובכל מאדך בכל עמקי מחשבותיך כמו מאד עמקו מחשבותיך:
There are two thoughts that are man’s day and night, thoughts about women, and thoughts about money,1Baba Bathra 164a. and because of them he gives his life. There are other thoughts, envy, enmity, haughtiness, the appetites, the enjoyment of his children, the yearning for sons and women, the entertainment of friends, strolls and the most current banal matters. All of these incur loss of time for the study of the Torah. Therefore, “With all thy heart, with all thy soul” (Deut. 6:7) is stated proximate to worship and love to say, “worship and love the Lord.”2Maimonides, Commentary on Aboth, Chapter I, p. 3. “With all thy might” (Deut. 6:7), “with all your wealth” is not said, but, “thy might,” it is to say, with every attribute that He affords you.3Berakoth 54a. Another possible meaning is that one should love God no matter what treatment he metes out, good or evil. If wealth is taken from you, do not think after it, everything is for the good. Thus it has been said, “Also unto Thee, O Lord, belongeth mercy for Thou renderest to every man according to his work” (Ps. 62:13). Do not read, “according to his work” but “from his work.” If he has children He takes away his children, if he is wealthy He takes away his wealth during his lifetime, but this is a great kindness for He punishes him in this world of vanity, in order to bring him to the world to come.4Erubin 22a. Another interpretation of “with all thy might,” with all the depth of your thoughts as “Thy thoughts are very deep” (Ps. 92:6).
Два помысла есть у человека днём и ночью: помыслы о женщине и помыслы о деньгах, и ради них он отдаёт душу свою. И ещё другие помыслы: зависть, ненависть, гордыня, вожделение, радость от детей и тоска по детям и жёнам, смех товарищей, прогулки и пустые новости. И всё это приводит к пренебрежению Торой. Поэтому сказано: «Всем сердцем твоим и всей душой твоей» — в отношении служения и любви, то есть: служи и люби Вездесущего. «И всем мэодеха» — не сказано «всем имуществом твоим», а «мэодеха» — всякой мерою, которой Он отмеряет тебе. Забрал у тебя деньги — не ропщи, ибо всё к добру. И это то, что сказано (Теилим 62:13): «И Тебе, Господи, милость, ибо Ты воздаёшь человеку по делу его». Не читай «по делу его» (ма-асэху), а «от дела его» (ми-маасэху). Если у него есть сыновья — взыскивает через сыновей, если он богат — взыскивает через богатство при жизни. И это великая милость — что воздаёт ему в этом мире, мире суетном, дабы привести его в мир грядущий. Другое толкование: «И всем мэодеха» — всей глубиной мыслей твоих, как сказано: «Весьма глубоки помыслы Твои».
