To honor a person means to respect his will, and so it is to honor a father and mother.1J. T. Peah 1:1. If this were not so, even a thoroughly righteous man would be beyond rescue from transgression.2Kiddushin 31b. How so? His father and mother stretch forth the cup to him or give him drink and numerous other services that a man can not avoid (receiving). Therefore it is good for all God-fearing men to forego the “demands of their honor” (honors due them) vis-a-vis their children even without their (children’s) knowledge, so that the children not be punished, as in the case of Rabbi Huna who tore silk garments in the presence of his son Rabbah to see if he would become angry (but prior to doing this) he set aside the “demands of his honor.”3Ibid., 32a.
