אם באת לידי נסיון והתאפקת לחטוא אל תחזיק טובה לך לומר עמדתי בנסיון שמא באו אבותיך לאותה מדה וכשלא חטאו בקשו מהקב"ה כשיבואו בניו באותה מדה שיתאפקו בהם מחטוא שנאמר (בראשית כב ח) אלהים יראה לו השה לעולה בני ויקרא שם המקום ההוא ה' יראה שיהו בניו נשחטים על קידוש ה' ונשרפים כיצחק ותברך להקב"ה שהחזיקך על יצרך שנתן לך לב לנצח את יצה"ר שנאמר (דברי הימים ב לב לא) כי עזבו אלהי' לנסותו עזבו מכלל שבידו הכל לכך בקש מלפניו שנא' (תהלים פו יא) יחד לבבי ליראה שמך וכתיב (תהלים נא יב) ורוח נכון חדש בקרבי:
If you were put to a test and you kept yourself from sinning, do not boast of it saying, “I withstood the test.”1Midrash Rabbah, ed. Horeb, Genesis, Chapter LII, p. 110. Perhaps your forefathers came to the same test and did not sin and they asked of the Holy One, blessed be He, that when their sons come to the same test they be given the power to keep from sinning,2Midrash Rabbah, ed. Horeb, Leviticus, Chapter XXXII, p. 88. for it is said, “God will provide Himself the lamb for a burnt offering my son etc.… and Abraham called the name of that place Adonaijireh”3See Perush. (Gen. 22:8-15). His children will be slaughtered in Sanctification of the Name and burnt like Isaac.4And do not sin. You should bless the Holy One because he strengthened you over your inclination, and gave you a heart to be victorious over your evil inclination,5Kiddushin 30b. for it is said, “God left him to try him” (II Chron. 32:31). “Left him,” from this it is apparent that all is in His hand. For this reason David entreated Him, for it is said, “Make one my heart to fear Thy name” (Ps. 86:11), and it is written, “And renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Ps. 51:12).
Если ты подвергся испытанию и удержался от греха — не приписывай заслугу себе, говоря: я устоял в испытании. Быть может, предки твои оказывались в таком же положении, и когда не согрешили — просили у Святого, благословен Он, чтобы, когда потомки их окажутся в таком же положении, они удержались от греха. Как сказано (Берешит 22:8): «Бог усмотрит Себе агнца для всесожжения, сын мой». И назвал то место «Господь усмотрит» — чтобы потомки его были закалаемы ради освящения Имени Господня и сжигаемы, как Ицхак. И благодари Святого, благословен Он, что укрепил тебя над дурным началом, что дал тебе сердце победить его. Как сказано (Диврей а-Ямим II, 32:31): «Ибо оставил его Бог, чтобы испытать его» — «оставил его» — значит, всё было в Его руке. Поэтому проси пред Ним, как сказано (Теилим 86:11): «Объедини сердце моё, чтобы бояться имени Твоего». И написано (Теилим 51:12): «И дух твёрдый обнови во мне».
