One man, who gambled with his fellow with dices, won [the game] and the one who lost went and stole a wooden piece used for playing like one called the game of chess [Note: The word שקקי is identified by the Jewish Encyclopedia (1904, vol. 4, p. 18) as referring to chess. This is based on the use of the word אישקאקי, which is etymologically similar, to refer to the game in mediaeval Hebrew."> and the like... Thereafter he went forth and won off the sum he previously lost. (Later on) he posed the question whether any guilt lies on him (for what he had done). The answer he got was: "One who steals from a thief tastes a taste of theft himself. Furthermore (the very actions of yours) proved that you got despaired of your money. However where one saves his property from a robber it is allowed for him to take immediate legal action on the spot (and this is how you should have acted)".
