בעיר אחת לא היו מים רבים כדי לטבול בהם והיה היישוב מקום ריוח ורצון היהודים לגור שם אמר להם החכם כיון שאין שם מים אלא מים שמנסין בהם הגנבים והכומרים קורין עליהן שם ע"ז שלהם לא יתכן לנשים לטבול בהם ואם יטבול סכינים וכלי מתכות וזכוכית באותן מים אין טוב לעשות ברכה לשם שהזכירו עליהם שם עבודה זרה:
In one city, there was not much water for immersion, but the settlement was a spacious and desirable place for Jews to live there. The sage said to them: "Since there is no water there except the water that thieves are tested with and the priests invoke their idolatrous names upon, it would not be proper for women to immerse in it. And if knives, metal utensils, and glassware are immersed in those waters, it is not good to recite a blessing in God's name over them, as they have invoked the name of idolatry upon those waters."
В одном городе не было достаточно воды для погружения, а поселение было просторным и удобным, и евреи хотели там жить. Сказал им мудрец: поскольку нет там воды, кроме той, которой испытывают воров, и жрецы произносят над ней имя своего идола — женщинам нельзя окунаться в неё. А если окунать ножи и металлическую и стеклянную посуду в ту воду — нехорошо произносить благословение над тем, над чем упомянули имя идолопоклонства.
