The rule of the matter is let a man pursue the golden mean of each and every idea1Maimonides, Hilkhoth Deoth, 3:1. until his thoughts are directed toward that mean. This is what Solomon said, “And let all thy ways be established” (Prov. 4:26). A man should not say, “because jealousy, lust and ambition are evil and cause man to be removed from the world I will try assiduously to remove myself from them (jealousy, lust and ambition) to the opposite extreme.” And (if) he does so, so much so, that he does not eat meat, drink wine, reside in a suitable dwelling, or wear appropriate clothing, except sack cloth, hard wool and the like, as do Christian priests; (let him know) this too is an evil course and one is forbidden to pursue it2Tanna debe Eliyahu, ed. Lector M. Friedman (Vienna: Achiasaf, 1902), Chapter XIV, p. 69. and must remove himself from it. He who treads this path is called “sinner”3Baba Kamma 91b. because it is said concerning the Nazarite, “and make atonement for him for that he sinned by reason of the dead” (Num. 6:11), and our sages said, “If the Nazarite, who afflicts himself and abstains only from wine is called “sinner” and needs atonement, how much more so does he who denies himself all things.4Taanith 11a. Therefore our scholars commanded that a man should not deny himself (anything), except those things that the Torah alone has denied him. Also he should not forbid himself through oaths and vows matters that are permissable. In addition our sages of blessed memory said, “Are those matters which the Torah already prohibited insufficient that you deny yourself other things as well.” Included among these (people) are those that fast continually,5Shulhan Arukh, “Orah Hayim,” 288:3. they are not in the good path, and so they said, “He who afflicts himself with fasts is called sinner, for he might be forced to rely on people.”6Taanith 22b. But a person whose evil inclination overwhelms him is permitted to afflict himself and subdue his desire. Scribes, teachers, laborers are not permitted to afflict themselves so that they do not diminish their work.7J. T. Demai 7:3. For if the Holy One, blessed be He, desired fasts He would have commanded Israel.8Maimonides, Eight Chapters, Chapter IV. However, He asked only that they subdue themselves and fear Him, for it is written, “and God hath so made it that men should fear before Him” (Eccl. 3:14).
