אל תשמח לבך אם יכבדוך כי לפי הכבוד והנאה שיש לו לאדם בעולם הזה על מעשיו מנכין מזכיותיו בעולם הבא ואם תאמר והלא תקן רשב"ג שיעמדו לכבוד שמים עשה לפי שיקבלו שכר על שיקבלו מורא נשיאותו עליהם אטום אזניך לנבל וחסר לב וקוה לאל. אל תלעוג לטעות זולתך פי' אם חבירך יטעה כי אינך מושל בדברי פיך טוב שתדום ויאמרו דבר של גנאי עליך משתדבר ותקרא עובר ומתעבר לכל מה שידבר בך ואם הוא איש זקן חשוב אותו כיונק אל תענה אותו כסכלו אז יחבק ידיו ויחנק:
Let not your heart rejoice if they honor you, for according to the honor and pleasure that a person derives in this world from his deeds, they disallow from his merits in the world to come.1Arakhin 16b. And should you say, “Did not Rabbi Simeon ben Gamaliel ordain that they should stand before him.”2Horayoth 13b. For the honor of heaven he did this, in order that they may be able to receive reward in taking upon themselves the fear of his office. Close your ears to the churl and the fool and look in hope to God. Do not laugh at a mistake of another for neither do you rule over the words of your mouth. Better that you keep silent and let him say shameful things about you than that you speak and call him sinner.3The commentators, Mekor Hesed and Perush, suggest the following readings: (Perush) “Do not laugh at the mistake … mouth. Close your ears … to God. Better that you keep silent and let him say etc.…” (Mekor Hesed) “Do not laugh at the mistake… of your mouth. Better that you keep silent … call him sinner. Close your ears to the churl … hope to God. If he is an elderly man.…” If he is an elderly man regard him as a child and do not answer him according to his foolishness, for he will then clasp his hands and choke.
Пусть не радуется сердце твоё, если тебя почитают, ибо по мере почёта и наслаждения, которые есть у человека в этом мире за его дела, вычитают из его заслуг в мире грядущем. А если скажешь: ведь Рабан Шимон бен Гамлиэль установил, чтобы вставали — то это ради Небес, чтобы получали награду за то, что принимают на себя трепет перед его наси. Заткни уши от подлого и безумного и уповай на Бога. Не насмехайся над ошибкой ближнего — то есть если товарищ твой ошибётся — ибо ты не властен над словами уст своих. Лучше тебе молчать, и пусть скажут позорное о тебе, чем говорить и прослыть вмешивающимся. Ко всему, что скажут о тебе — если это старый уважаемый человек, считай его младенцем. Не отвечай глупцу по глупости его — тогда он сожмёт руки и задохнётся.
