סייג לחסידות החי יתן אל לבו מקראות ופגעי בני אדם וידע כי על חטאיהם היה להם כן ובדבר אשר זדו נפרע להם מדה כנגד מדה ומתוך כך יפשפש במעשיו פן יקרה לו אשר קרה להם:
A safeguard for piety is that the living should consider the accidents and misfortunes that overtake people and realize that because of their sins this happened to them. In the self-same matter wherein they planned evil they were punished, measure for measure.1Nedarim 32a. As a result of this let a man examine his deeds lest it happen to him as it happened to them.
Ограда для благочестия: живой пусть положит на сердце стихи Писания и несчастья людей, и узнает, что за грехи их постигло их так, и тем, чем грешили — тем и были наказаны, мера за меру. И через это пусть проверит свои дела, дабы не случилось с ним то, что случилось с ними.
