כל ישראל ערבים זה לזה ואלמלא הערבות לא היה אדם מוחה ביד חבירו על חטאיו ולא היה נותנים לב לחקור על עושי רשעה לבערם. אלא כדי שיעשו סייגות וגדרות שלא יחטאו. הן כל אלה יפעל אל פעמים שלש עם גבר כיון ששמר אדם עצמו מן העבירה וכפה יצרו פעם ראשונה שנייה ושלישית מכאן ואילך הקב"ה שומרו:
All Israelites are responsible for one another. 1Shebuoth 39a. Were it not for this responsibility, no one would reprimand his neighbor for his sins nor would they care to search out those who do evil to eliminate them, but would only be concerned to make for themselves safeguards and fences that they should not sin. “Lo, all these things doth God work, twice, yea thrice, with a man” (Job 33:29). As soon as a person safeguards himself from transgression and overwhelms his evil inclination a second and a third time, thereafter the Holy One, blessed be He, guards him.2Yoma 38b.
Все евреи ответственны друг за друга. И если бы не эта взаимная ответственность, человек не упрекал бы ближнего за грехи и не стремился бы расследовать дела злодеев, чтобы искоренить их. Но именно для того, чтобы устанавливали ограды и заборы, дабы не грешили. «Вот, всё это совершает Бог два-три раза с человеком» — коль скоро человек уберёг себя от греха и преодолел дурное начало в первый, второй и третий раз — отныне Святой, благословен Он, хранит его.
