לעולם אל יבקש אדם מהקב"ה דבר שאינו ראוי כגון שתלד אשתו לח' חדשים ויחיה הולד או יהיה רצון שאהיה בכרכי הים אע"פ שיש יכולת הקב"ה לעשות כן הרי זו תפלת שוא. אסור לקבוע בתפלתו שבח אחר (פי' בעמידה) אבל כל היום כולו אם רוצה לומר שירות ותשבחות תבא עליו ברכה:
A man should never seek from the Holy One, blessed be He, a thing that is unnatural.1Berakoth 54a. For example, that his wife should give birth in eight months and the child should live or, (to pray) “May it be the Divine will—that I be now beyond the ocean! Even though the capability to do so is in the hand of the Holy One,2Ibid., 60a. blessed be He, behold this is a vain prayer. One is forbidden to introduce into his prayer3In the “Eighteen Benedictions.” See, Daily Prayer Book, ed. Hertz, p. 130. an added benediction.4Berakoth 33b. However, the rest of the day, if he wishes to recite songs and praises, may he be blessed.5Ibid., 21a.
Пусть никогда не просит человек у Святого, благословен Он, того, что невозможно: например, чтобы жена его родила на восьмом месяце и ребёнок выжил, или «да будет воля, чтобы я оказался в заморских странах». Хотя у Святого, благословен Он, есть сила сделать это — это молитва напрасная. Запрещено добавлять собственное восхваление в молитву Амида (то есть в Стоячую молитву). Но в течение всего дня, если хочет произносить песни и хвалы — да придёт на него благословение.
