“Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife” (Exod. 20:14). It is written without a vav,1Scriptio defectiva. do not cause yourself to be coveted. It is a warning not to beautify himself in order to find favor in the eyes of his neighbor’s wife and instill his love and attractiveness in her heart. You should not appear desirable to your neighbor’s wife. Another rendition, “Thou shalt not covet,” one should not praise a pretty woman in the presence of his friend lest he pursue her and it will be his (the one who praised) sin. This is to say, you should not make the wife of your friend desirable to others. You should not derive pleasure from the beauty of an unmarried woman, so much the more from a married woman in order that you may enjoy deriving pleasure from the splendor of the Shekhina.2Zebahim 118b.
