והכתיב (תהלים י"ח יב) ישת חשך סתרו סביבותיו סוכתו חשכת מים עבי שחקים, א"ל כתיב ביה (ישעי' מ"ה ח) ושחקים יזלו צדק, וצדק זה מדת הדין של עולם שנאמר (דברים טז כ) צדק צדק תרדוף וכתיב בתריה (שם) למען תחיה וירשת את הארץ, אם תדין עצמך תחיה, ואם לאו הוא ידין עליך ותתקיים בעל כרחך:
[The students objected,] "But is it not written, '[God] set darkness as His hiding place, His pavilion around Him, darkness of waters, thick clouds of the skies' (Psalms 18:12)?"He [Rabbi Rachumai] said to them, "It is written about Him, 'The Heavens will rain down righteousness [צדק]' (Isaiah 45:8). This righteousness is the treat of judgment [דין] of the world, as is said, 'Justice, justice, you will pursue' (Deuteronomy 16:20), and it is written after it, 'In order that you will live and inherit the earth' (Ibid.). If you will judge yourself, you will live. If not, He will judge you and enact [the judgment] against your will."
Но ведь написано (Теилим 18:12) «Сделал тьму покровом Своим, вокруг Него — шатёр Его, тьма вод, облака небес»! Сказал ему: написано о них (Йешаяу 45:8) «И небеса прольют праведность (цедек)». А цедек — это мера суда мира, ибо сказано (Дварим 16:20) «Праведности, праведности ищи». И написано далее (там же) «Дабы ты жил и наследовал землю». Если будешь судить себя — будешь жить. А если нет — Он будет судить тебя, и ты устоишь поневоле.
