ויש מהם אשר היו משביעים בכח שמות הקודש אל המלאכים, ויקוו לאור, והנה חושך, כי היו מלאכים תחתונים מאוד, ממונים על עבודת העולם הזה, והם מורכבים מטוב ורע, והן עצמן לא ישיגו האמת והאורות העליונים, ומגלין להם דברי תערובות, טוב ורע, אמת ושקר, ודברים בטלים דעניני רפואות, וחכמת הכימי"א, ופעולות קמיעין והשבעות, וגם אלה ביין שגו ובשכר תעו. מי יתן והיה לבבם זה לעסוק בתורה ובמצוות, וישאו קל וחומר מאותן ארבעה גדולי ישראל, שנכנסו לפרדס ולא נמלט מהם איש, כי אם ההוא סבא חסידא, רבי עקיבא (ואף הוא, בקשו מלאכי השרת לדחפו, לולא ה' עזרתה לו), נכנס בשלום ויצא בשלום:
Later, there arose men who sought to attain spiritual levels by invoking the angels, through the power of invoking their holy names. However, they hoped for light and beheld darkness; for the angels they conjured were of a very low order, who were appointed to affect matters of this lowly world. This being so, they are composed of both good and evil and themselves perceive neither Truth nor the supernal lights. Therefore, they revealed matters that were mixed with good and evil, truth and error and vain things; matters, such as mystical cures, alchemy (the art of transforming silver into gold and copper or tin into silver), amulets, oaths and incantations. Furthermore, these people fell to imbibing wine and strong drink. If only they would have been as devoted to studying Torah and doing mitzvot! They would have learned from the example of the four great sages of Israel who entered Paradise.2The word paradise is a corruption of the Hebrew word Pardes. Not one of them left unscathed, except for the saintly Rabbi Akiva, and even in his case, the attendant angels attempted to eject him. Had not HaShem-יהו"ה helped him, he would not have entered in peace and left in peace. If even the greatest sages of Israel were thus endangered, how much more so, we, who cannot begin to compare to them?
И есть среди них те, которые заклинали силой святых Имён ангелов, и ожидали света, но вот — тьма. Ибо это были ангелы весьма низшие, поставленные над делами этого мира, и они составлены из добра и зла, и сами они не постигают истину и высшие светы, и открывают им вещи смешанные — добро и зло, истину и ложь, и вещи пустые из области врачевания, и науку алхимию, и действия амулетов и заклинаний. И также эти — «от вина шатались и от хмельного блуждали» (Йешаяу 28:7). О, если бы сердце их было расположено заниматься Торой и заповедями! И пусть выведут заключение от лёгкого к тяжёлому из тех четырёх великих Израиля, что вошли в Пардес (Сад), и не спасся из них никто, кроме того старца-хасида — рабби Акивы (и даже его ангелы-служители хотели оттолкнуть, если бы Г-сподь не помог ему) — вошёл с миром и вышел с миром.
