260. “Happy is he who considers, etc.”“Happy is he who considers the poor; the Lord will deliver him on the day of evil” [Psalms 41:2]. It should ‎have said: “on the day of evil [ra]”; what is: “on the day of evil [ra’a]”? He explains that this is referring to the day when that evil one [ra’a] rules, to ‎take his soul. “Happy is he who considers the poor”: This poor is one who is dangerously ill. “He ‎who considers” [means] that he heals him from his sins before the Holy One, blessed be He. An alternative explanation: This is the “day” when the judgment presides over the world, and he considers how to be spared from it, as it is stated: “The Lord will deliver him on the day of evil,” meaning that on the day when the judgment was given to that evil [ra’a], to rule over the ‎world, the Lord will save him. ‎
Explanation: The difficulty he raises is as follows: It should have written: “The Lord will deliver him on the day of evil [ra, in the masculine form].” Why does it say, “on the day of evil [ra’a],” which is in the feminine [form]? Rather, the verse is alluding to the rule of the ‎kelippa, called ra’a, which takes a person’s soul. [The phrase] “he who considers the poor” means that one speaks to the sick that he should repent. Thus, the Holy One, blessed be He, delivers him from the ‎rule of the ‎kelippa, which is called ra’a.
The Zohar mentions this here in relation to its earlier statement that there are three who inflict harm upon themselves [section #254#]. It therefore offers ‎advice in this regard here, that one should consider the poor, namely, speak to the heart of the sick, so that he will repent, and the Lord will heal him. In ‎reward, “the Lord will deliver him on the day of evil,” which he caused to his own soul. ‎ “An alternative explanation: This is the day when the judgment presides over the world, and he considers how to be spared from it.” Even if the day of judgment presides over the world, “the Lord will deliver him” in ‎reward for considering the sick and leading him to repent. For “the day of evil” is “the day when the judgment was given to that evil, called ra’a, to rule over the ‎world.” Yet, regarding that one who ‎considered the sick, to cause him to repent, the Lord will deliver him from that evil. ‎ The difference between the two interpretations is that the first refers only to ‎an individual who has inflicted harm upon himself, whereas the second interpretation also applies to that evil that has been decreed upon ‎the entire world. Even then, the Lord will deliver him in merit of that commandment. ‎
