For a person is called a lamp (ner), as it is written (Proverbs 20:27), “The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord.” And that is, as a man has two hundred and forty-eight limbs, together with the spirit and the life - that is ner (the numerical count of which is two hundred and fifty), as it is written in the Zohar, etc. And the Torah is called light, such that the Torah scholar who has the Torah in his hands can enlighten you from the darkness of night, so that you can check for chametz – which is the evil impulse – in order to destroy it. And it is like the Rambam wrote (Mishneh Torah, Human Dispositions 2:1), “Just like there is sickness with the body, etc. and the physician for the spirit is the Torah scholar.”
