In our Torah portion, it is mentioned in the Zohar [Zohar, Acharei Mot, 153b]: "They took evil counsel for themselves." Why did they take this counsel? They said to themselves, "If we enter the Land of Israel, we will no longer be the heads of the tribes, for Moses will appoint other leaders over the children of Israel." In the wilderness, they were privileged to be leaders, but in the Land of Israel, they would not be. Therefore, they took evil counsel for themselves and died because of their words.
