If Ploni sees that one wants to make a match with another and he [Ploni] knows that the groom has great failings (the nature of which will be explained below in section 6), and the father of the [prospective] bride knows nothing about it, and if he did know, he would not consent, he should be told. But he who looks into it should know that there are in this din many details, which we shall explain below; and he must take all of them into consideration before he permits this to himself. He should also not deduce leniencies for himself from one situation to another. And before we begin to explain this din in all its details, we shall attempt to remove the common stumbling locks in this area (though, to speak the truth, there is no need to mention them in a book, for they are very obvious and require neither learning nor reasoning). But because of the great harm wrought by them and because they are regarded as permitted by many individuals, I have been constrained to explain the great deception of "the men of the tongue" in this regard. Perhaps the L–rd will grant the removal of some of this great blindness. And this I begin with the help of the L–rd.
