וְאַחַר כֵּן נֶעְתַּק מֵחוֹבוֹת הָאֵבָרִים אֶל מַה שֶּׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ מַעֲשֶׂה בִּלְבַד, וְשָׂמָהוּ שְׁלֹשָׁה חֲלָקִים, בְּאָמְרוֹ: "וּקְשַׁרְתָּם לְאוֹת עַל יָדֶךָ וְהָיוּ לְטֹטָפֹת בֵּין עֵינֶיךָ וּכְתַבְתָּם עַל מְזוּזוֹת בֵּיתֶךָ וּבִשְׁעָרֶיךָ", וְהֵם תְּפִלָּה שֶׁל יָד וּתְפִלָּה שֶׁל רֹאשׁ וְהַמְּזוּזָה. וְכֻלָּם גּוֹרְמִים לִזְכֹּר אֶת הַבּוֹרֵא וּלְאָהֳבוֹ בְּלֵב שָׁלֵם וְלִכְסֹף לוֹ. וּכְמוֹ שֶׁאָמַר הַכָּתוּב בְּחֻקֵּי זִכָּרוֹן אַהֲבַת הָאוֹהֲבִים (שיר השירים ח, ו): "שִׂימֵנִי כַחוֹתָם עַל לִבֶּךָ כַּחוֹתָם עַל זְרוֹעֶךָ" וְגוֹמֵר. וְאָמַר (ישעיהו מט, טז): "הֵן עַל כַּפַּיִם חַקֹּתִיךְ". וְאָמַר (חגי ב, כג): "אֶקָּחֲךָ זְרֻבָּבֶל... וְשַׂמְתִּיךָ כַּחוֹתָם". וְאָמַר (שיר השירים א, יג): "צְרוֹר הַמֹּר דּוֹדִי לִי בֵּין שָׁדַי יָלִין". וְשָׂם אוֹתָם שְׁלֹשָׁה, כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּהְיוּ חֲזָקִים וְקַיָּמִים יוֹתֵר, כַּאֲשֶׁר אָמַר הֶחָכָם (קהלת ד, יב): "וְהַחוּט הַמְשֻׁלָּשׁ לֹא בִמְהֵרָה יִנָּתֵק".
Afterwards, He proceeded to the duties of the limbs which consist of action only, and gave three examples, as He said: "And you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand; And they shall be as Totafot between your eyes; And you shall write them upon the doorposts of your house, and on your gates", which refers to the Tefilin of the hand and of the head, and the Mezuza, all of whom cause one to remember the Creator, and to wholeheartedly love Him, and yearn to Him, and as scripture says regarding how lovers keep their love in mind: "Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm" (Songs 8:6), and "Behold, I have engraved you upon the palms of my hands" (Isaiah 49:16), and "In that day, says the L-ord of hosts, will I take you, O Zerubavel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, says the L-ord, and will make you as a signet ring: for I have chosen you" (Chagai 2:23), and "A bundle of myrrh is my beloved unto me; it (the myrrh) shall lie between my breasts" (Songs 1:13). G-d ordained three signs in order that they be stronger and more enduring, as the wise man said: "a threefold cord is not quickly broken"(Eccles. 4:12).
А затем Он перешёл от обязанностей органов тела к тому, в чём есть лишь действие, и разделил это на три части, сказав: «И повяжи их как знак на руку твою, и да будут они повязкой между глаз твоих, и напиши их на косяках дома твоего и на воротах твоих». Это тфилин на руке, тфилин на голове и мезуза. И все они побуждают помнить Творца и любить Его в целостном сердце и стремиться к Нему. Как сказано в Писании об установлениях памятования любви любящих (Шир а-Ширим 8:6): «Положи меня печатью на сердце твоё, печатью на руку твою» и т.д. И сказано (Йешаяу 49:16): «Вот, на ладонях Я начертал тебя». И сказано (Хагай 2:23): «Возьму тебя, Зерубавель... и сделаю тебя как печать». И сказано (Шир а-Ширим 1:13): «Мирровый пучок — возлюбленный мой для меня, между грудей моих пребывает». И сделал их тремя, дабы они были прочнее и устойчивее, как сказал мудрец (Коэлет 4:12): «И нить тройная не скоро порвётся».
