ואח״כ חָקַרְתִּי עַל מָה שֶׁאָנוּ חַיָּבִים לַבּוֹרֵא יִתְבָּרַךְ אֲשֶׁר הוּא תַּכְלִית כָּל תַּאֲוָה וְקֵץ כָּל תִּקְוָה כִּי מִמֶּנּוּ הַתְחָלָה וְאֵלָיו הַתִּכְלָה. וּמָה שֶׁרָאוּי לוֹ מִמֶּנּוּ מֵאַהֲבַת רְצוֹנוֹ וְיִרְאַת חֲרוֹנוֹ אֲשֶׁר הֵמָּה תַּכְלִית הַטּוֹבָה וְהָרָעָה כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמַר הַכָּתוּב (תהלים ל) כִּי רֶגַע בְּאַפּוֹ חַיִּים בִּרְצוֹנוֹ וְגוֹ׳. שַׂמְתִּי אַהֲבַת הָאֵל יִתְבָּרַךְ שֹׁרֶשׁ עֲשִׂירִי לַכְּלָל מֵחוֹבוֹת הַלְּבָבוֹת:
Afterwards, I inquired on what we are obligated to the blessed Creator, who is the goal of all our desires and the purpose of all our hopes and with whom all things begin and end, and as to what is due to Him from us in regard to the love of His favor and fear of His retribution, the former being the highest good and the latter being the greatest evil, as Scripture says "For His anger is only a moment; in His favor is life; Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning" (Ps. 30:6), I therefore placed love of G-d as the tenth root of the general principles of the duties of the heart.
А затем я исследовал, чем мы обязаны Творцу, да будет Он благословен, Который является пределом всякого желания и целью всякой надежды, ибо от Него — начало и к Нему — конец. И чем мы обязаны Ему — любовью к Его благоволению и трепетом перед Его гневом, которые составляют предел добра и зла, как сказано в Писании (Теилим 30): «Ибо мгновение — в гневе Его, жизнь — в благоволении Его» и т.д. Я сделал любовь к Б-гу, да будет Он благословен, десятым корнем в общей совокупности обязанностей сердец.
