וְהַפֶּתִי הַנִּמְהָר בְּעָמְדוֹ עַל סֵפֶר הָאֱלֹהִים הוּא מְשַׁמֵּשׁ בּוֹ לָדַעַת חִידוֹת הָרִאשׁוֹנִים וְדִבְרֵי הַקַּדְמוֹנִים וִימַהֵר לֵהָנוֹת בּוֹ בְּעִנְיְנֵי הָעוֹלָם וְיָבִיא רְאָיָה מִמֶּנּוּ לִרְדֹּף אַחֲרֵי הַתַּאֲוָה וּלְהַנִּיחַ דֶּרֶךְ הַפְּרִישׁוּת וְלַעֲשׂוֹת כִּרְצוֹן אִישׁ וָאִישׁ וְלָלֶכֶת אַחֲרֵי רְצוֹן כָּל מִין וּמִין מִבְּנֵי הָאָדָם כְּדַעְתָּם וּכְחֶפְצָם וְהוּא כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמַר הַכָּתוּב (משלי ה) הוּא יָמוּת בְּאֵין מוּסָר וּבְרֹב אִוַּלְתּוֹ יִשְׁגֶּה.
The foolish and distracted person when he occupies himself with the Book of G-d, uses it to learn riddles of the ancients or the historical accounts. He hastens to apply it for worldly benefits and will bring arguments from it to justify pursuing worldly pleasures, abandoning the way of abstinence (from the superfluous), going in his own way, and following the views and wishes of each type of person he meets, as written "he shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray" (Prov. 5:23).
А простак торопливый, стоя перед книгой Б-жьей, пользуется ею лишь для познания загадок древних и слов предшественников. И спешит извлечь из неё пользу в мирских делах, и приводит из неё доказательства для погони за вожделениями и для оставления пути воздержания, и для того чтобы поступать по воле каждого человека и следовать желаниям всякого рода людей, по их мнению и их прихоти. И он подобен тому, о ком сказано в Писании (Мишлей 5): «Он умрёт без наставления, и от великой глупости своей собьётся с пути».
