וְכַאֲשֶׁר הִתְבָּרֵר לִי חִיּוּב מִצְוֹת הַלְּבָבוֹת מִן הַתּוֹרָה כַּאֲשֶׁר הִתְבָּרֵר וּמִן הַשֵּׂכֶל חִפַּשְׂתִּי עָלָיו בְּדִבְרֵי רַזַ״ל וּמְצָאתִיו יוֹתֵר מְפֹרָשׁ בְּדִבְרֵיהֶם מִמָּה שֶׁהוּא מְפֹרָשׁ בַּסְּפָרִים וּמִן הַשֵּׂכֶל קְצָתוֹ בִּכְלָל כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמְרוּ רַחֲמָנָא לִבָּא בָּעֵי וְאָמְרוּ לִבָּא וְעֵינָא תְּרֵי סַרְסוּרֵי דְּחֶטְאָה נִינְהוּ. וּקְצָתוֹ בִּפְרָט בְּמַסֶּכֶת אָבוֹת שֶׁאֵין צָרִיךְ לְהַאֲרִיךְ בְּזִכְרוֹ. וּמָצָאתִי הַרְבֵּה מִמֶּנּוּ בְּמִדּוֹתֵיהֶם וּבְמִנְהֲגֵיהֶם הַמְקֻבָּלִים מֵהֶם כְּשֶׁהָיוּ נִשְׁאָלִים עַל עִנְיְנֵיהֶם כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמְרוּ רַזַ״ל בַּמֶּה הֶאֱרַכְתָּ יָמִים.
After it had become clear to me that the duties of the heart are obligatory from the Torah and from reason, I searched the matter in the writings of our Sages. I found it to be even more explicit in their words than what is explained in the Torah and derived from reason. Some of them are stated as general principles such as "G-d wants the heart" (Sanhedrin 106b), and "the heart and the eyes are the two agents of sin" (Yerushalmi Berachos 1:5). Some of them in Tractate Avos, which there is no need to elaborate. I also found many in their traits and habits when they were asked about them as written regarding "to what do you attribute your long life?" (Megila 27b).
И когда мне стало ясно, что обязанность заповедей сердца подтверждается Торой, как уже выяснилось, и разумом, я стал искать это в словах наших мудрецов, да будет благословенна их память, и обнаружил, что оно ещё более явно выражено в их словах, чем в Писании и [доводах] разума. Часть — в общем виде, как они сказали: «Милосердный требует сердца», и сказали: «Сердце и глаза — два посредника греха». А часть — в частностях, в трактате Авот, о чём нет нужды распространяться. И я нашёл многое из этого в их нравах и обычаях, переданных от них, когда их спрашивали об их жизненном укладе, — как сказали мудрецы: «Чем ты удостоился долголетия?»
