אָמַרְתִּי לוֹ אֵין זֶה רָאוּי אֶלָּא לְמִי שֶׁאֵין בּוֹ יְכֹלֶת לְעַיֵּן מִפְּנֵי מִעוּט הַכָּרָתוֹ וְרֹחַק הֲבָנָתוֹ כַּנָּשִׁים וְכַקְּטַנִּים וְחַסְרֵי הַדַּעַת מִן הָאֲנָשִׁים אַךְ מִי שֶׁבְּכֹחַ שִׂכְלוֹ וְהַכָּרָתוֹ לַעֲמֹד עַל בֵּרוּר מָה שֶׁקִּבֵּל וְעִכְּבוּהוּ מִלְּעַיֵּן בּוֹ בְּשִׂכְלוֹ הָעַצְלוּת וְהַקַּלּוּת בְּמִצְוֹת הָאֵל וּבְתוֹרָתוֹ הוּא נֶעֱנָשׁ עַל זֶה וְאָשֵׁם עַל אֲשֶׁר הִתְעַלֵּם מִמֶּנּוּ.
I said to him: "This applies only to those who lack the ability to inquire due to low powers of perception and weakness of understanding, such as women and children, or feeble minded persons (Translator: women used to be much less educated than in our times). But a man who has sufficient power of intellect and perception to attain certainty on the truth of Tradition, and he neglected to investigate this due to laziness or due to holding in light esteem the commandments of G-d and His Torah - certainly he will be punished for this and he sins for having neglected them.
Я сказал ему: «Это верно лишь для того, кто не способен к исследованию из-за скудости своего разумения и слабости своего понимания, — как женщины, дети и ограниченные умом мужчины. Но тот, кто силой своего разума и познания способен постичь и прояснить то, что он принял, и кому лень и легкомыслие по отношению к заповедям Б-га и Его Торе помешали исследовать это своим разумом, — тот будет наказан за это и виновен в том, что пренебрёг этим».
