וְאַחַר כָּךְ הָיוּ מִתְעַסְּקִים וּמִשְׁתַּדְּלִים לְבָרֵר מַעֲשֵׂיהֶם וְחוֹבוֹת לִבּוֹתָם וּכְשֶׁהָיְתָה בָּאָה לְיָדָם שְׁאֵלָה נָכְרִית מִתּוֹלְדוֹת הַדִּינִים הָיוּ מְעַיְּנִים בָּהּ בָּעֵת הַהִיא בְּדֶרֶךְ הַסְּבָרָא וּמוֹצִיאִים אֶת דִּינָהּ מִן הָעִקָּר שֶׁהָיָה בְּיָדָם וְלֹא הָיוּ מַטְרִידִים דַּעְתָּם עָלֶיהָ קֹדֶם לָכֵן מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהָיוּ עִנְיְנֵי הָעוֹלָם נְקַלִּים בְּעֵינֵיהֶם.
Afterwards, they busied and strove to clarify their active obligations and inward duties. If a strange case came before them that belonged to the class of inferences from existing laws, they investigated it at the time it was presented to them, and deduced the law from the principles known to them. But they never troubled their minds for these things before this for they regarded secular matters lightly.
А затем они занимались и старались прояснить свои деяния и обязанности своих сердец. И когда к ним приходил необычный вопрос из производных законов, они рассматривали его в тот момент путём логического рассуждения и выводили его решение из основного принципа, имевшегося у них. И они не утруждали свой разум этим прежде [чем возникала нужда], поскольку мирские дела были незначительны в их глазах.
