וְשַׂמְתִּי שָׁרְשָׁן הָעֶלְיוֹן וִיסוֹדָן הַגָּדוֹל יִחוּד הָאֵל בְּלֵב שָׁלֵם ואח״כ עִיַּנְתִּי בְּמָה שֶׁאָנוּ חַיָּבִין לְחַבֵּר אֶל יִחוּדוֹ מֵהַחוֹבוֹת הַנִּזְכָּרוֹת הָרְאוּיוֹת לוֹ מִמֶּנּוּ וְיָדַעְתִּי דַּעַת בְּרוּרָה כִּי הַבּוֹרֵא יִתְבָּרַךְ מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהוּא אֶחָד אֱמֶת וְלֹא יַשִּׂיגֵהוּ שׁוּם עֶצֶם וְלֹא מִקְרֶה וְאֵין מַחְשַׁבְתֵּנוּ מַשֶּׂגֶת דָּבָר שֶׁאֵינוֹ עֶצֶם וְלֹא מִקְרֶה נִמְנְעָה מִמֶּנּוּ הַשָּׂגָתוֹ מִצַּד עֶצֶם כְּבוֹדוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ וְהֻצְרַכְנוּ לְדַעְתּוֹ וּלְהַשִּׂיג מְצִיאוּתוֹ מִצַּד בְּרִיּוֹתָיו וְזֶה הוּא שַׁעַר הַבְּחִינָה בַּבְּרוּאִים שַׂמְתִּי הַבְּחִינָה שֹׁרֶשׁ שֵׁנִי לַכְּלָל מֵחוֹבוֹת הַלְּבָבוֹת.
I set their chief root, and great foundation to be the wholehearted acceptance of G-d's Unity. Afterwards, I examined which of the duties of the heart are most fitting to be joined to the [wholehearted acceptance of the] Unity of G-d. I fully realized that as the Creator is the true Unity, and is subject to neither essence nor incident, it is impossible for us to grasp Him from the aspect of His glorious essence. We are therefore forced to know and grasp Him from the aspect of His creations. This is the topic of the second treatise, the Gate of Examination of G-d's works. I therefore made this examination the second root of the general principles of the duties of the heart.
И я сделал их высшим корнем и великим основанием — единство Б-га в целостном сердце. А затем я рассмотрел, какие из упомянутых обязанностей мы должны присоединить к Его единству, — те, что подобают Ему с нашей стороны. И я ясно осознал, что Творец, да будет Он благословен, поскольку Он — истинный Единый, и Его не постигает ни субстанция, ни акциденция, а наша мысль не способна постигнуть то, что не является ни субстанцией, ни акциденцией, — мы лишены возможности постичь Его со стороны самой сущности Его славы, да будет Он благословен. И мы нуждаемся в том, чтобы познать Его и постичь Его существование со стороны Его творений. И это есть раздел исследования творений. Я сделал исследование [творений] вторым корнем в общей совокупности обязанностей сердец.
