וְכַאֲשֶׁר נַעֲמֹד בְּמַחְשְׁבוֹתֵינוּ עַל גְּדֻלַּת הַבּוֹרֵא יִתְעַלֶּה וְעֹצֶם יְכָלְתּוֹ וְחָכְמָתוֹ וְעָשְׁרוֹ וְנִסְתַּכֵּל בַּחֲלִישׁוּת הָאָדָם וְחֶסְרוֹנוֹ וְשֶׁאֵינוֹ מַגִּיעַ אֶל הַשְּׁלֵמוֹת וְרֹב צָרְכּוֹ וְרִישׁוֹ לְדָבָר שֶׁיְּמַלֵּא מַחְסוֹרוֹ וְנִבְחוֹן רוֹב טוֹבוֹת הַבּוֹרֵא יִתְבָּרַךְ וְחַסְדּוֹ עָלָיו וְשֶׁבְּרָאָהוּ כְּמוֹ שֶׁבְּרָאָהוּ מִן הַחֶסְרוֹן בְּעַצְמוֹ וְהוּא רָשׁ וְצָרִיךְ אֶל מָה שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ תַּקָּנָתוֹ וְלֹא יַגִּיעַ אֵלָיו כִּי אִם בִּיגִיעַת נַפְשׁוֹ וְזֶה מֵחֶמְלַת הַבּוֹרֵא עָלָיו כְּדֵי שֶׁיַּכִּיר אֶת עַצְמוֹ וְיִבְחַן בְּכָל עִנְיָנָיו וְיִדְבַּק בַּעֲבוֹדַת הָאֵל עכ״פ וִיקַבֵּל עַל זֶה גְּמוּל העוה״ב אֲשֶׁר לוֹ נִבְרָא כְּמוֹ שֶׁהִקְדַּמְנוּ מִן הַדְּבָרִים בַּשַּׁעַר הַשֵּׁנִי מִן הַסֵּפֶר הַזֶּה כַּמָּה הָאָדָם חַיָּב לוֹ ית׳ מִן הָעֲבוֹדָה וְהַיִּרְאָה וְהַשֶּׁבַח וְהַהוֹדָאָה וְהַתְמָדַת הַתְּהִלָּה עִם בֵּרוּר חִיּוּב כָּל אֲשֶׁר הִקְדַּמְנוּ מִן שֶׁבַח ב״א וְהוֹדָאָתָם קְצָתָם לִקְצָתָם.
When we comprehend in our thoughts on the greatness of the Creator, exalted be He, on His infinite might, wisdom and wealth [i.e. resources]; and then turn our attention to a man's weakness and deficiency, in that he never attains perfection; when we consider his poverty and lack of what he needs to supply his wants and then investigate the numerous benefits and favors which the Creator has bestowed on him; when we reflect that the Creator has created man as he is with deficiencies in his very being - poor and needing for his development all necessities which he can only obtain by exerting himself - this too stems from the Creator's mercy to him, so that he may know himself, examine all his conditions and cleave, under all circumstances, to the service of G-d, and so receive for it the reward of the world to come, for the attainment of which he was created, as we have already set forth in the second treatise of this book - how much indeed then does a human being owe to the blessed Creator, in service, thanksgiving and continuous praise, in view of the demonstration already given of the obligation of praise and gratitude that human beings owe to each other for favors rendered them.
И когда мы остановимся в наших мыслях на величии Творца, да возвысится Он, и мощи Его могущества, и Его мудрости, и Его богатства, и вглядимся в слабость человека, и его несовершенство, и в то, что он не достигает полноты, и в обилие его нужд, и его бедность в том, что восполнит его недостаток; и рассмотрим обилие благодеяний Творца, да будет Он благословен, и Его милости к нему, и то, что Он создал его таким, каким создал, — в несовершенстве по самой его сути, бедным и нуждающимся в том, в чём его благо, и он не достигает этого иначе как трудом своей души; и это из милосердия Творца к нему, дабы он познал самого себя и испытал себя во всех своих делах, и привязался к служению Б-гу во всяком случае, и получил за это воздаяние мира грядущего, ради которого он создан, как мы предварили из сказанного во второй главе этой книги, — сколь обязан человек Ему, да будет Он благословен, служением, и страхом, и хвалой, и благодарностью, и постоянным славословием, — при ясности обязательности всего, что мы предварили, из хвалы людей и благодарности их друг к другу.
