"And behold, from the Nile were coming up seven cows, fair of appearance and fat of flesh, etc. And behold, from the Nile were coming up seven cows, lean of flesh, and they ate the lean and evil cows, etc. And it was not known that they had come into their midst, etc. And behold, seven ears of grain coming up, full and good, and seven ears, thin, meager, scorched by the east wind, and the thin and evil ears swallowed up the good ones, etc." There is here a correct allusion according to what is known: that there are seven attributes - Chesed, Gevurah, etc. - which are called the seven days of building. Now, within these attributes there is an aspect of evil and an aspect of good, and these are the seven paths (shvilim) that a person must ascend in their good aspect according to the Torah. Here there is an ethical teaching: that sometimes a person draws himself and his thought to ascend in those attributes in their good aspect, and this is completed in his mind and thought. But afterwards, suddenly, another thought comes to him, the opposite of this, and he draws himself toward the evil side. One must be very vigilant about this - that it happens in all matters and in all attributes - that his second thought completely pushes away the first thought from him, and his first thought becomes completely forgotten from him as if it had never been at all. This is what the Torah warns here: "From the Nile" - as it appears in the Tikkunim, "this is the Torah" - "coming up seven cows," that is, the seven days of building that a person must ascend in, upward and upward. Therefore they are called parot (cows), from the language of parim v'rabim (fruitful and multiply) - that one must draw toward the good side within them, and the good aspect within them should constantly multiply, so that one becomes accustomed in deed and speech. This is also "seven ears of grain" (shibolim), that is, seven paths (shvilim), "full and good" - the good aspect within them. "And behold, from the Nile coming up seven cows, lean of flesh" - that is, there is also an aspect of evil in those seven attributes, which are also parot, meaning parim v'rabim (multiplying) - which accustom him constantly more and more to the evil aspect. And sometimes, "and the evil cows ate, etc., the good cows, and it was not known that they had come into their midst" - that is, afterwards another thought comes to him and draws him toward the evil side and accustoms him to it, until he becomes so attached and immersed in it that the good is consumed and completely forgotten from him - whether he ever had a good thought, and whether there is any aspect of good in the world. This is also, "and the thin and evil ears swallowed up the good ones, etc." - for it is one dream and alludes to one matter. One must be very vigilant about this with an open eye, and one must be in this "a discerning and wise person" who will see to bind and restrain himself, so that he will maintain his first thought that awakens him to good, and not fall into another thought that will completely destroy his first thought. This is what [Pharaoh] said: "Let [Pharaoh] see [to appoint] a discerning and wise man, and let him appoint officers over the seven years of plenty." The "seven" is as our Sages of blessed memory said concerning David's statement, "As the Lord lives, if I touch the Lord's anointed" - that he swore to his evil inclination. The matter is this: David was uncertain whether Saul was called a pursuer and could be saved [from him] with his [Saul's] life, according to "If one comes to kill you, etc.," or whether not to touch him, for in any case he is the Lord's anointed and it is forbidden to touch him. Therefore, immediately when this good thought came to him not to touch him, he swore "As the Lord lives, if I touch him" - so that he would not be able to change from this thought to another thought, even though the other [course] also appears justified according to Torah law, as mentioned above. This is the allusion: "From the Nile" - da oraita (this is the Torah) - "coming up seven evil cows of flesh" - that is, the evil aspect also [can appear] according to the Torah. One must discern which is the good side and bind and restrain himself in this. This is what is alluded to: "And let him appoint officers" - in the manner that he should look and remember his good thought; "over the seven" - that is, with an oath, as mentioned above, so that he will not fall from his good thought. Understand this.
