שרש העבודה: והנה שרש כל ענין עבודה הוא היות האדם פונה תמיד לבוראו והוא שידע ויבין שהוא לא נברא אלא להיות מתדבק בבוראו ולא הושם בזה העולם אלא להיות כובש את יצרו ומשעבד עצמו לבוראו בכח השכל הפך תאות החומר ונטיתו ויהיה מנהיג את כל פעולותיו להשגת התכלית הזה ולא יטה ממנו:
The root of service (to God): Behold, the root of all matters of service is that man should always turn to his Creator. And that is that he know and understand that he was only created to cleave to his Creator, and that he was only placed in this world to suppress his [evil] inclination and subordinate himself to his Creator with the power of the intellect - the opposite of the desire of materiality and its inclination. So he should conduct all of his actions to reach this purpose and not incline away from it.
Корень служения: Корень всего служения состоит в том, чтобы человек постоянно обращался к своему Творцу. А именно: он должен знать и понимать, что он сотворён лишь для того, чтобы приобщиться к своему Творцу, и помещён в этот мир лишь для того, чтобы подчинять своё Дурное начало и покорять себя своему Творцу силой разума, вопреки вожделениям материи и её склонностям. И он должен направлять все свои действия к достижению этой цели и не отклоняться от неё.
